We all know that the political "noise" in has been ratcheting up from all sides for a while. If @jeanne-mayell 's graph of the timing is an accurate indication, we are on the last bit of the downslope, and we can be reasonably assured that the noise is only going to get worse over the next two months until we hit the bottom (if we haven't already).  I would just like to make a gentle suggestion that we focus our sights, our energies and our lights on the goals of  getting at least two new D Senators (while keeping all of the ones that we have, of course) and holding onto the House. Even if the majorities are slim, as long as it's a majority in both, we'll be okay.

"Urgent" things are going to be popping up right, left, and center for the next little while, desperately  vying for our attention and spouting all sorts of apocalyptic scenarios, so we should all do our best to tune out all of the ruckus and try not to react to every little thing that pops up.  I know it's difficult (believe me, I know! 🤣 ), but we all need to remember that this is the last gasp of the opposition, and they know it, which is why they're fighting so hard.  Let us focus on the reality that we will win.  We will succeed.  Everything else is just noise.

I have to agree with everyone's sentiment about how they give TFG too much air time in the media. I've been sick of it for years, yet they keep continuing. And seeing how the R's won primaries who support him over those who don't made me upset too. Though I have heard that the dems actually helped that happen by pouring some money into the R's who still support him with the hopes that when the election comes in November people will choose a dem over a TFG supporting R.

It's a tricky calculation, and I pray it works.

I am a Democrat but I think of the few people left in the other party, Liz Cheney was one who stood to the things that are right for the country. How does her defeat affect the November 2022 results? Do we still see a blue wave and a democrat president in 2024?

Welcome to the forum Peepo!

Not sure how how her defeat will impact the election results.

Many have seen a favorable blue election for this year.  You can scroll through our read the future night predictions to see what has been predicted on the subject and some predictions going out to the 2024 election as well.

Hi @peepo !    I think Liz Cheney should not have conceded.  She should have just said that the Wyoming election was rigged, and walked off the stage...

But of course, none of those folks have a sense of humor.  They are all doomed to go thru life looking like they smell something bad.

By now this is "old news" to everyone....but if anyone is interested, NY Magazine came out with The Last Lonely Days of Ivana Trump which I was finally able to access. Provides an interesting glimpse into the woman.

This story is from Angry Staffer on Twitter.  It is a reminder of why I will always love my MAGA supporting friends who may have missed a few clues with TFG but are still exceptional humans.  Perhaps this is part of the awakening.

“This evening, I was walking into a local grocery store to pick up a couple of things for Mrs. Angry. A lady was wandering between cars, holding a sign, and asking for money for diapers and formula. She didn’t speak much English, and I wasn’t carrying any cash.  I found out what size diapers she needed, went into the store, picked up a case of diapers, some wipes, and a can of formula.  When I came out to give her the items, there was a lady in a MAGA hat giving her some money, and playing with her baby.

I don’t tell this story because I need — or want — any credit for buying her baby stuff. This was a lesson I needed today. It’s one I often preach, but it’s one I needed today.

We’re more alike than we’re different, and even if we don’t agree on anything, we can be kind.  I was *shocked* to find a lady in a MAGA hat helping someone that her President would tell to go to the other side of the wall. That saddens me.

6 years ago, this scene wouldn’t have meant anything—it would have just been normal. When people need help, you help them, right?  Now? It feels like everything has changed, but maybe it doesn’t have to.  I’ve gotten to the point where I see a MAGA hat and immediately assume the worst. I shouldn’t.

Be the good you want to see in the world, and maybe—just maybe—we’ll make it out of here stronger.”

Not surprising; the KGOP is like an automat of self-humiliating stupid.

I was just reading this morning that they've tried to attack John Fetterman by comparing him to Jackie Coogan. Bad move. Not only was Jackie Coogan a complete badass in real life, a WW2 hero, he was a great actor and nice guy. And you KNOW Fetterman's campaign is going to turn it around on them in a fantastic way.

To add to the hilarity, someone posted a side by side of Coogan as Uncle Fester and Doug Mastriano, and they are IDENTICAL!  🤣

Remember the movie A Civil Action (John Travolta?  (It is a true story that unfolded near where I live of how a corporation's toxic waste was causing cancer deaths in children living nearby. In fact the lawyer who brought the action was living in my town).

Well turns out that the EPA recently published a statistical cancer risk model for locations all over the US, and an investigative publication, Propublica.com,f has now made it easy for people to read.  You can click on their article and pop in any zip code in the US to see if it is a toxic hot spot and what the cancer risk is for people who live out their lives there.

It is interesting that in spite of gathering all this information, the EPA has done little to stop the toxic air emissions that were causing the increased risk — or even to inform affected communities.

I checked the addresses of my family and friends:  https://projects.propublica.org/toxmap/

P.S. You can get Propublica to send you for free a regular list of their publications each day or week.  Propublica employs some of the best journalists in the country.  They are also worth donating to.

I realize that this is not fun information but wouldn't we want to know this information? We can write to our state and federal reps if we live in one of these communities.

Everyone -ProPublica is wonderful. We have a paid subscription but it's not required. They send out weekly newsletters and important articles daily. They do great work, are completely non-partisan, and I believe the last bastion of true investigative journalism. They do not use advertisers so they are not beholden to anyone.  We send $10 per month. So worth it.

Well, we are less than three months away from the midterms.  And what have we learned?

  1. I think it is pretty much guaranteed that Trump won't be indicted until after the midterms. The Republicans are flocking to his banner....for now.  This is a boost for the Trump candidates, of course.  But methinks that Democrats are finally learning to fight fire with fire.  While I do not doubt that there was indeed urgency as to getting those documents out of Trump's tiny hands (you can never convince me that he really needs seven hundred sheets of classified papers for something mundane like toilet paper,) I think the release of the warrant was also political in nature.

Yes, Trump and Republicans who align with him got a boost.  But for how long?  Also, it has not escaped me that Trump's wins in the primaries may translate to loses in November.  I suspect that Trump will moan and complain for the next few months and basically drive the narrative for Republicans while the average voter thinks "I DON'T WANT TO VOTE FOR YOU IF ALL YOU ARE GOING TO DO IS SERVE TRUMP!!!!!"  Yes, there are real problems with the country right now (inflation among them), but while Republicans are fixated on Trump, they have less time to lie and blame the country's woes on Democrats.

Democrats know this.  By the time that November hits, Trump would be yelling about how unfair life is for him until he is blue in the face (while hopefully doing his part to paint our country blue in the process).  So, while this warrant looks bad in that it has ramped up Republican enthusiasm at the moment, it won't last long enough.  Also, the more information that comes out, the worse it will look for Trump, especially when the January 6, 2021 hearings start up again next month.  But Democrats will wait until after midterms before they file an indictment with someone.

Personally, I hope they do it before January 1, 2023, as a sendoff to Cheney.

  1. Republicans are STILL in denial about just how badly they screwed up on the abortion issue.  Seriously, you lose Kansas by almost twenty points, ask for a RECALL, and then plan to go door-to-door to confront voters on their vote?!

Instead of recycling this "all elections are rigged unless my side wins" trash, has it occurred to them that maybe the vast majority of the country has no interest of becoming handmaids and rape targets with no privacy whatsoever?

I heard on the news today that a woman in Louisiana found out her child had acrania (a fatal condition where the child's brain and skull don't become fully developed.)  There is no way to cure this condition, and no child has survived for more than one week after birth (the vast majority don't make it that long).  The hospital will not provide an abortion because the child still has a heartbeat, so this poor mother will be forced to carry this child to term, knowing that it will die, and at great risk to herself.  She will have to endure the torture every time a person ignorantly smiles at her and cheerfully asks questions such as "when is it due?" or "have you picked a name yet?"

Even people who are not mothers, such as myself, are outraged and sympathetic to her plight.  Because now she is trying to save money to travel out of state, and the longer she waits, the more her own health is at risk.

No matter what Republicans do, these stories will continue to trickle in.  I would not be surprised if the media is watching and waiting for just the right story to further galvanize the public (I don't count Fox News, because they are not media, but rather a poor, pathetic attempt at state sponsored media akin to Russia.)  And if Republicans continue to show just how much they despise women, they may have a nasty surprise coming for them in November.

  1. Speaking of surprises, does anyone think that we might be getting one from the Russia/Ukraine War soon?  I don't know why, but I get the sense that Ukraine is quietly getting into position and is waiting until the weather turns cooler (aka-just after harvest) before they release a coordinated mass attack on Russian forces in Crimea and the Dunbas region.

Why then, you ask?  First, while Russians are known to tolerate cold winters well, they need coats just like everyone else, and we know that Russia is not arming and supplying their troops well.  Second, with the cold temperatures, Ukraine will have the advantage because they know the terrain and will make use of it.  If Ukraine launches an attack on Russia's supply lines at the same time, they will starve the Russians, who, without any food from the land, will be forced to scrouge in homes that are likely poorly stocked and probably abandoned to begin with.  Also, I did some research and learned that October-November are the wettest months of the year for Ukraine.  Rain equals mud, and mud equals problems for the Russians to move efficiently in large groups.  So, I can see small groups of Ukrainians attacking Russian forces at various places and their smaller groups and knowledge of the local terrain will increase their chances for a "shock and awe" type of attack to demoralize the Russians.

Also, if Ukraine does this right, Russia will know that they would have to continue to fight through winter.  Imagine all the work it takes to get supplies to Russian forces in hostile territory (and imagine how much worse it will get in winter).

Russia may be able to control their media, but as the deaths in Russian forces continue to go up and families start to ponder their loved ones freezing and starving to death in Ukraine, how long will it be before the tide starts to turn against Putin?  Add in the economic sanctions and the suffering of millions of Russian civilians who will go through their first full winter after almost a year of sanctions...well, you get the idea.

Putin knows this, hence the recent news coverage on his ally's daughter killed in a car bombing.

Do I think Ukraine attacked the woman who died?  While I admit that Ukraine is certainly a good suspect, I think another source is far more likely.  Another business owner (I have heard that Russian businesses act much like the mob) is a possibility.  I am also inclined to suspect Putin himself.  I would not put it past Putin to kill his ally's friend in a bid to garner national outrage and to have another false excuse to attack Ukraine.

Final thoughts-I expect several October surprises.  Hopefully they will work in our favor.

Re: Duginova car bombing - did some reading on that this morning quoting people who are poli-sci experts on Russia.  You hit on one possibility - she and her father are in the oligarch class, and the oligarchy there operates like a mafia, so it may be a rival of just someone she or her father "dissed".

Another possibility is the small but emerging Russian resistance movement.

Third possibility is a false flag operation by the FSB, to justify further aggressions against Ukraine. There are reports of surveillance cameras being out of commission in the area of the bombin begin 2-3 weeks ago.

Least likely is Ukraine, because they would have targeted her father, not her, most likely and they wouldn't hesitate to take credit for it (they are denying).

Thanking the deities that we now have a strong Democratic opponent to face DeathSentence in the Nov. election for Florida governor.  Charlie Crist, former Rep. governor, now Democratic House Member, won the primary with (estimated) 59% of the vote.

I dislike like his primary opponent (Nikki Fried) because she was sending out mailers with a lot of outdated, out-of-context, and just plain lying attacks on Crist.  She was using the Rep. playbook and that is simply unacceptable to me.  Plus, in this race, it was - in my view- far more important to focus on defeating the poisonous DS than spending time and money and influence tearing down the other Democrat.

Crist is a decent man who saw the light and defected from the R's years ago.   And, as my spouse pointed out, there was no way any R's would be persuaded to vote for Fried in November, but some of them will be comfortable voting for Crist.

And Val Demings will be going up against Rubio for the Senate.  (She was an overwhelming favorite and is very popular.)

Biden has so much win!

Today he announced student debt release. I also read news from a senator that they are legislatively working on academic interest changes, but that requires Congress and is harder. But its one step at a time.

Honestly Biden and the Democrats are heavily in communication and it shows. This includes the passage in the one bill including greenhouse gas as a pollution. And all the various steps in previous bills to make the student relief a legal thing for Biden to do.

Lots of savviness!

Also Pat Ryan won in his election in the swing district and that is showcasing Democrat strength.

It's better than nothing. $10k of debt forgiveness is a drop in the bucket for most people. In-state tuition at public colleges in CA costs more than that per year for undergrad. Most people with student debt carry well over $40k. People who do grad school or professional schools typically carry more than $150k in debt.

I'm disappointed, frankly. $25k would have been a better starting point.

I think Democrats have finally saw the light.

Instead of pointlessly trying to include Republicans in everything and trying to go back to a time when it was normal to (gasp!) compromise and get stuff done, I think Biden and Democrats have finally accepted the fact that there is no possible way that McCarthy, McConnell, etc. will ever put aside their power-seeking ambitions and work as true patriots for this nation.  Further, over half of the Republicans in power are government hating, Nazi and KKK loving, racist, sexist Trumpers who want to dictate to all of us when life begins (abortion) when they can't even tell when an election is over, if the continued whining about 2020 is anything to go by.

We wish we could go back to a time when the difference between Democrats and Republicans was simply matters of policy, but we can't pretend anymore.  Now it is a fight to save our country from those who wish to take our freedoms away and make this country a little school yard where they can act as playground bullies without consequences.  And for women in Post Roe, we are fighting for our very lives, as well as the rights to protect our future children (to those crazy people who say that taking women's right to chose is a way to protect all babies, then what happens if the government suddenly decides to do the "one child" policy like China?  If you take away a woman's right to chose, not only do you take away her right to an abortion, but you may also provide the mechanism for future leaders to force all women to have abortions!  Great job, Republicans!)

(Also, as a side note, those who love the fact that Roe was overturned should be mindful of the fact that Dobbs could potentially be used as a means to force them to wear masks and get vaccines!  Oh, the HORROR!)

Anyway, I am proud of Democrats.  They are using sneaky methods like McConnell did to us and are getting things done.  While Republicans are bowing to Trump and putting problematic candidates up for election, Democrats are quietly getting acceptable candidates that appeal to independents and have a decent chance of winning.  While Republicans have cried about poor Trump, Democrats focus on the real fears of voters.  Inflation?  Still a problem, but Democrats are working on it.  Jobs?  Not a problem now!  Abortion and women's health?  Democrats know they have women's and reasonable men's support on this issue.

Republicans like DeSantis are really idiots. "Don't say gay"?  Can anyone name an incident where a teacher scarred a child for saying "gay?"  Last time I checked, if there was an issue, parents, teachers, and the school board would hold a meeting and discuss it and take appropriate action if it was needed.  But DeSantis is now saying that teachers and schools can be sued by parents who want to dictate what is taught in schools?

As someone who comes from a family of teachers, the sheer stupidity of DeSantis overwhelms me.  He thinks he has taken a calculated risk and is appealing to a greater number of voters (parents) at the expense of teachers.  But very few parents will actually be swayed by this because (1) there wasn't an issue to begin with and (2) the few parents who would take advantage of this stupid bill are the ones who never discipline their children anyway, much less go out and vote.

I hope Democrats continue to play smart and not give an inch of mercy to Republicans.  The ads need to play over and over showing Republicans not caring about women and showing the harm they have done post Roe.  They need to go back to the old footage about how Republicans wanted to get rid of Obamacare and scare more voters to the polls.  And if at all possible, allow Trump to scream and whine about the multiple investigations and tie him to Republicans as much as possible.  DON'T indict him anywhere until after the midterms.  But continue to drag his allies into court hearings and continue to televise the Janaury 6th hearings right up until the end.  Force Trump to ask all Republicans to make a vow to save him if he is indicted, then watch as Republicans tear themselves apart trying to please him.  Show voters that Trump is the only priority for Republicans, even at their own expense.

Quotes from Charlie Crist, who is challenging DeathSentence for the FL governorship:

Charlie Crist, the Democratic nominee for Florida governor, said Wednesday that he doesn’t want supporters of Governor Ron DeSantis to vote for him in November.

“Those who support the governor should stay with him,” he said during a press conference on Wednesday. “I don’t want your vote. If you have that hate in your heart, keep it there.”

During an appearance on MSNBC he made similar comments about DeSantis being hateful: “I’m going to beat [DeSantis] because I’m running on love, and love always wins. If he wants to run on hate, culture wars, dividing people, and making people hate each other, that’s his turf. It’s not mine. I’m on different turf, and it’s what Floridians deserve.”

https://sports.yahoo.com/hate-heart-charlie-crist-says-164404827.html

Charlie really is a good guy, and I hope even non-Floridians will help him if they can. DS is a danger to the entire country and can't be allowed to grow stronger.

It's great-- But I'm not sure I like the term "sneaky" because of the negative connotations.  If someone playing by the rules beats you at chess, were they "clever" or "sneaky"?   As long as the D's don't resort to the pages in the R handbook on lying and cheating, I think it's all good.  😊

Well, well.  Karma is here, and she is working overtime.

Apparently, Marjorie Greene, our local rabble-rouser and domestic terrorist wannabe, is the "victim" of swatting (someone called police to report "shots fired" and a shooter at the residence).  Reports are unclear right now but apparently the person is taking issue on Greene's stance against transgender people.

First point, I do not approve of someone making false claims.  No, I am not crying for Marjorie Greene.  If there is ANYONE who deserves a few sleepless nights wondering if she is going to be the victim of harassment by an unknown outside party, it is her, especially after all the times she has called on others to literally kill Democrats.  Do I want her killed?  NO!  Do I think this is the right way to punish her?  NO (Voting her out would be SOOOO much better.  Suing her or putting her in jail would be wonderful on a whole new level, as it would renew my faith in our country.)

Having said that, I will not lose any sleep for what Greene is suffering from.  Her complete lack of empathy for others and her bizarre desire to harm others has convinced me that she is evil in the extreme, so any appeal about her being a human with genuine human emotions rings false in my ears.

It is law enforcement that I feel sorry for.  Here they are having to investigate crimes against a woman who believes that law enforcement should be beaten up (January 6, 2021) or terrorized (the recent FBI search into Trump).  They should not have to waste precious time for a woman who would throw them under the bus whenever it suits her.

I don't think she will learn from this experience.  But less crazy Republicans may finally learn "hey, every time we call for violence, who is to stop the other side from using violence against us?"  As I said many times before, most Trumpers and Republicans are ultimately bullies at heart, and many will back down when they face mass opposition.

But the real twist to this story is that Greene issued a statement against KiwiFarms, an alt-right website (apparently, the caller claimed that he was from that group).  But KiwiFarms is not a "pro-transgender site.  They are actually a site that Greene normally supports (they hate gays, transgender, women, liberals etc.  They are even linked to the Christchurch mass shooting.

Methinks that Greene did not research who the group was before making her statement.  Because this is what she said about KiwiFarms;

“Isn’t it concerning that such a website exists?  That website needs to be taken down. There should be no business or any kind of service where you can target your enemy. That’s absolutely absurd and this is the type of lawlessness that Democrats want all over the country.”

I am sorry, but tears are coming out of my eyes every time I read this statement.  From laughter.

So, Greene is asking for KiwiFarms to be closed, apparently not knowing that they are the same as her?!  HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA (*gasp-must take breath for oxygen) HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!

I sincerely doubt that the caller is from KiwiFarms (Even they aren't that stupid).  But despite my disapproval for the caller's actions (as it causes aggravation for law enforcement), I can't help but laugh about how a measure of karma has found Marjorie Greene and has had her attack a group that her probably assisted her in numerous harassing tactics nationwide.

I wonder what will happen once Marjorie learns the truth.  Will she redact her statement? Probably, because she is so stupid and she is in a district that will never punish her for the racist cruel being that she is.  But I hope the caller doesn't try this again.  As I said before, it is law enforcement who suffers most from this, and they are deserving of my sympathy in ways that Greene and KiwiFarms will never be.

I hope that this post does not offend anyone, and please know that I am against violence or false reports of any type.  Having said that, I am a human, not a saint, so seeing people like Greene and KiwiFarms suffer a small measure of the pain they inflict on others is leaving me with a sense of grim satisfaction.  Actions have consequences, and it is about time they learned that, before karma returns with another lesson.

I am sending light, but I think that Florida is so warped that there is no way that DeSantis will lose, even with a good candidate for the Democrats.  Remember, this is the same state that had voting irregularities for 2000 and 2016 (both in favor of Republicans to get the electoral vote).  The mere fact that they continue to support DeSantis in the wake of all that he has done has led me to lose hope for any change in Florida, especially now that Trump lives down there.

If there are any Floridians on this site, I would love to hear from you what you think DeSantis's chances are.  I admit I am biased (I am a Tennessee Football fan, and we become mortal enemies of the Florida Gators on September 23, LOL!), but all this stuff about "Don't Say Gay" in the classroom being celebrated as a huge milestone yet guns are still being used to kill students....seriously?  It is hard to have hope for a voting population who puts up with that.

But then again, maybe there is hope.  I understand that the judge who ruled against a girl having an abortion because her grades were not good lost his election, so maybe the tide is turning, if only so slightly.

Crist has a very good chance.  He was a very popular governor, and lately he's been giving off Obamaesque vibes.  I think he will get the vast majority of the Independent vote.  DS keeps going lower and lower and crazier and crazier -- with that and the walls closing in on TFG, I think even a lot of R's are shaking their heads.   Don't write us off.   There is rising resentment directed towards DS and his made-up issues and insane policies and Crist has got the opposition fired up.

Also we've got to work to get Val Demings in the Senate, Max Frost in Val Demings vacated House Seat, and Danielle Hawk in (effing) Cammack's District 3 House seat, just to name a few.  All three of these candidates have momentum behind them now.  Two years ago we denizens of District 3 were bombarded by ads showing Cammack toting a gun around in a cow pasture and bragging on her NRA support. 😖 I don't think guns play quite as well now as they did then.

I can only speak as a former Floridian who lived there in the Jeb Bush years (2001-04- Please clap!). Bear in mind too that I have had family in TN for decades and we lived south of the Mason-Dixon line for nearly 15 years all in, so I am familiar with "Southern Culture" - both the good and the bad.

When I lived there, the majority of the population was OLD. So old we used to call neighboring St. Pete "God's Waiting Room" (we lived near Clearwater) and the terminal at Tampa Airport used to look like a hospital corridor there were so many wheelchairs there. Those people have all died off, so there's some hope in that.

The flip side of the coin for me was how racist and evangelical many of the people under 50 were. I lost jobs for not being "Christian". Florida is one place I have actually been called the N-word despite not remotely being identifiable as Black (nor am I except for some minor DNA in the woodpile). It was also the last place anyone ever called me "four eyes" for wearing glasses. Many people there "homeschool" their kids - meaning Bible studies and not much else. Public schools throughout the state are at the forefront of regressionism - meaning they are a hot mess in most areas and barely succeed in educating at all, and there is little to no special ed for those who need it.

My point here is that there seems to be a strain of ignorance that is particularly strong in FL in general. We still have close friends there who are as liberal as we are, but the majority of age-peer people we had to deal with in all walks of life were judgmental and closed minded.  There's very little diversity - by this I mean that FL is the most segregated place I have ever lived - there's little to no overlap between different ethnic or religious groups. When 9/11 happened I remember Indian/Sikh neighbors (who I didn't really know) being persecuted so much in its aftermath that a couple of times I would pull over to offer a ride as they were walking along being jeered at by other drivers.

After the third time our daughter (who is a Brown person) got bullied and called the N-word IN PRESCHOOL, we decided best to continue raising her elsewhere, so we left in time for her to attend kindergarten in VA, which granted, we were in a small town there, but it was way more diverse/integrated, and a better mix of different kinds of people, but even the evangelicals there were not as bad as the ones in FL at the time, plus we had access to DC and Baltimore, which both have cultural institutions that FL severely lacked in comparison.

Others who live there now will be able to shed more light, but there's a reason it's called Floriduh. The ignorance there is the default setting and highly celebrated. Education & intelligence are not particularly valued. I would hope things have changed for the better statewide, but my belief is that while there are good size pockets of liberalism in places like Miami and Gainesville, most of the state is not that. I still have family in Orlando, who are so banana-maga that I haven't spoken to them in years (they started out as NYC liberals).

I hope @iridium is right and that things there are on the upswing, but y'all know me - always the pessimist in the group!

ETA: I believe that some places are cursed. Whether through "bad medicine" that the indigenous people who were being genocided attempted to try to rebuke colonization, or through the "voodoo" that enslaved Africans employed to try to ameliorate their situations, or just through bloodshed in general. I firmly believe that Florida as a whole is one of those places that will always be cursed unless somehow the curses get reversed, and I have no idea how that would happen.

One more thing about FL politics, this an observation from my (Jewish heritage) husband:

"What is with all these christian-y names? Crist means Christ, right? And DeSantis is something about saints? What's up with that? Do people there only ever vote for messiah-adjacent candidates? How come no candidates are ever Schmuel Bernstein?"

I'll just leave that there for everyone to muse on.

HAHA!  Just a little fun, nothing more.  Remember, I am with the Tennessee Vols, and we show our support in throwing golf balls and mustard bottles at Lane Kiffin during a game.

Ehhh....definitely not pleased with my fan base that day.  Besides the utter lack of class, one is left to wonder why the heck fans would carry mustard bottles and golf balls into Neyland Stadium in the first place.

Having said that, I am merely teasing the Gators out of fun.  Heck, we are part of the SEC, one of the best (if not THE BEST) sports conference in America.  Yes, we are crazy and we take our rivalries too far sometimes, but we would never cheer if an opposing player got injured or anything like that.  We are SEC, and we stand proudly together.

However, I do hope the Vols win this year, because I am sick and tired of losing to Florida every year!  We have gone through a litany of bad coaches over the last two decades, and none of them got past the third year. (Lane Kiffin, Derek Dooley, Butch Jones, Jeremy Pruitt, not to mention poor Brady Hoke and Jim Chaney, who had to act as intern coaches when the original coach left or got fired.)  Needless to say, I miss the days when watching my team play well.  Having said that, I will state that for the most part, SEC fans are remarkably supportive of one another.  They spend maybe two days of taunting each other before a game, and then the rest of the year encouraging one another, win or lose.

If only politics could be like that!

On a simi-related note, can we throw golf balls and mustard bottles at Trump?  He could always use the golf balls at his golf courses, and the mustard would help tone down his orange-tinged make-up.

@laura-f speaking of names, the DoJ just dropped a new one on TFG- (last week they called him a "Disgruntled Former Employee") HA!, but today they called him FPOTUS.  I assume the F stands for "Former", but could just as easily be "Fraudulent", "Fake", "Fascist", or "Felon". I am sure you can think of other "F" words to describe him, such as "_______", or "___-___". But what cracks me up is when anyone tries to pronounce FPOTUS, the "FP" sound is impossible to make without spitting, or at least sounding like it.

@laura-f   I am a 5th generation Floridian originally from Orange County. During my time on the planet I have also lived in several other places around the country and traveled quite a  bit so I feel I have some perspective.

Florida has problems, especially now.  Nevertheless I find myself a bit put-off by some of the generalizations.  FL is an extremely diverse state, politically, racially, and culturally.  The Clearwater/St Pete area is a completely different culture from Miami, which is entirely different from the Big Bend area, which is intellectually, culturally, and diversity-wise, a world away Gainesville although only a short drive away.   The state has urban liberals, back-to-the-land "hippies", deranged Magatts, old school Republicans, highly educated professionals, poorly educated folks, and millions of people somewhere in between.    What one observes in St. Pete or Orlando or any other single place is not necessarily representative of the entire state.

So please be aware that there are plenty of sane, decent people with inclusive attitudes. And we have had just about enough of DeathSatan's crap being shoved at us.

@laura-f I'm just doing a quick reply to your thoughtful post on Florida (because it's almost 1am and I need to go to bed).

I want to echo what you said about Florida being cursed. I lived in Clearwater and Safety Harbor between the ages of 8-18. It always felt very heavy energetically to me and I had some scary psychic experiences while living there.

A few years ago I visited some places where I had lived. I had not been back for decades. One place in particular was so haunted and thick with bad energy I almost had to run back to my car to get away. I had the distinct feeling that it was cursed. At the very least the sorrow was so thick and stagnant that it created a sort of negative vortex. It's hard to even write about because it spooked me so bad.

Many of those areas were places where slaves were traded and lynching's happened. The energy has not been cleared.

@kateinpdx   We have family up in the area between Clearwater and Safety Harbor.  I don't like the area mostly because it is overbuilt and there seems to be a lot of focus on money and status.  People in stores, etc. seem cold, mostly.  I would not want to live there. However-- and  I'm *not* questioning your experiences--  personally I have  never felt any extra-bad nasty energy there.

@laura-f    Palatka is a place where-- to me-- the energy does feel heavy and depressing. Palatka could be a beautiful place and tourist destination what with the St. Johns River, surrounding woodlands, and quaint 19th century buildings.  But it is economically depressed, run-down, and in the 3 decades I've been passing through I've never seen improvement.  Maybe it needs a thorough psychic cleansing.

That was partially my point, although it got lost in the mix - basically that my experiences were a while ago, and hopefully things have changed. We've been all over FL over the years and are well aware of the regional differences. Heck, my hubby has even been to Palatka for business and not many people can say that!

@unk-p

LOVE the FPOTUS thing, and because I am super-indoctrinated in the alphabet soup that is government language, I feel I should point out that it should be pronounced EFF-POTUS, which is g-dam perfect in my book.

We were not far from Safety Harbor and I agree with you. We used to walk a lot near Tarpon Lake on the boardwalk trails. Even when it was not a creepy foggy morning I always got the willies there - always sensed a presence (beyond the begging alligators in the lake). Ybor City also gave me goosebumps frequently. The whole state needs a cleanse IMHO.

@ana

Yes, people in that area of Pinellas are not very nice (generalizing but that is my experience). I have lived and worked all over the map, and Florida is the one place I've lived that I came away having not made or kept any friends and not for lack of trying.

I do think there is a difference between the land itself holding the energetic pattern of atrocities, sadness, and tragedy from the past vs. attributing troubles of the present day to curses laid down by people in the past.  Kind of creates an implication for holding the ancestors of today’s Black and Brown people at least partially responsible for today’s troubles. Or somewhat like way back in the day, a farmer's troubles with his cows attributed to a curse evidenced by a sour look given by an old woman, next thing you know she's up for witchcraft.

In West Virginia, across the river from where I live, we have something somewhat similar: the Mothman phenomenon in Point Pleasant, the collapse of the Silver Bridge in 1967, and before that the destruction and disasters and misery  brought by the coal extraction industry. People in the area began to say that Chief Cornstalk (Hokoleskwa in Shawnee meaning “a blade of corn”), a Shawnee leader murdered  in 1777 by American soldiers while he was in captivity on a diplomatic mission, put a 200 year curse on the land. Historians have disputed this, noting Hokoleskwa’s role and disposition as a diplomat and practically speaking the nature of his death gave no time for the laying down of curses. People to this day, though, attribute misfortunes of the region to Cornstalk’s curse.

The destruction brought by the coal industry is a familiar planetary story of natural resource extraction; the Silver Bridge, carrying a load heavier than what it was designed for, collapsed because of a defect in an eyebar in the suspension chain; and who knows what Mothman was about. We do have a  Mothman Museum and one heck of a Mothman Festival every year!

@laura-f Maybe it was the swamp energy of the lake that gave you the creeps?  I have met a lot of folks who find the natural environment of Florida to feel energetically heavy, thick, and organic.  Which it is.  Humidity, warmth, earthy smells, rampant vegetation, bugs, and Spanish moss will do that.   Many are not comfortable with it. (Some are though-- A friend of mine from the western mountains tells me that the earthy swamp energy makes for better sex.  😍 )

Personally I find the swamp energy comfortable, almost certainly because I was born to it,  There's definitely a "vibe" there-- it feels alive because it literally is.  I've come across old forests elsewhere that also feel alive and "present", but different.

Maybe this Florida energy tangent should be moved to another thread.

No that doesn't bother me - in fact I found the big cypress trees and moss comforting as well. And I'm used to humidity. This was more like sensing entities between the trees and under the ground. Does that make sense?

@Marigold, oh my goodness I hope my post didn't come across as blaming anyone (particularly Black or Brown people) for my experiences in Florida! (I don't think that's what you meant, but I want to clear that up if that's the case!).

I agree that there is a difference between the energies that the land might be holding vs what was done on purpose.

Growing up in Florida some of my favorite memories involve that eerie swamp atmosphere. I love the brackish waterways with the gators and turtles. There's something so beautiful and unique about it. I  miss watching the thunderstorms rolling in in the afternoons too. So beautiful. (I don't miss the giant spiders though, oy!)

That particular place I used to live felt so creepy and heavy in an unnatural way though.

I had a client years ago who would talk about places becoming hungry for certain energies. Like intersections where a lot of accidents happen, for example. She felt like it could create an energetic vortex of sorts. That's what that place felt like to me.
