@jeanne-mayell well, technically they didn't steal that word, because the mathematical term you're referring to is actually "googolnot google.
@tgraf66 yeah I realized that right after I posted and hoped there weren’t any geeks out there who would notice. But given the geek culture of Google I bet they WERE stealing googol. They just changed the spelling so it would sound just the way googol sounds which is google.
Okay I just googled Google. And they did steal the word. They were going to call it Backrub but decided googol fit all the bytes they needed. So does everyone already know this?
Okay just googled it. The origin of the name Google. They were going to call it Backrub but then decided that wasn’t grandiose enough so they grabbed from googol because it fit how much data they were going to be working with, ie the largest number people think of which is a googol.
@jeanne-mayell Okay I just googled Google
i love this game. "Siri, please ask Alexa to wikipedia Wikipedia.
@journeywithme2 hey! i am a guy thing, and i can totally hear you ?
@tgraf66. yes, Backrub was going to be their name, not Google.
https://www.businessinsider.com/the-true-story-behind-googles-first-name-backrub-2015-10
Google was originally named "BackRub", because the system checked backlinks to estimate the importance of a site. Eventually, they changed the name to Google, originating from a misspelling of the word "googol", the number one followed by one hundred zeros. Originally, Google ran under Stanford University's website until it burst through their bandwidth.
@unk-p. ? ? ? uh huh.. I can totally "see" them now... a bunch of "geeks" eating Subway/Buffalo's Wings n things and Pizza and drinking beers with all their devices sitting around in their t-shirts and sweatpants and converse shoes frat boy style creating "Backrub" aka Google LOL
Now I am laughing even harder!!! Just "Googled" them and yep!!!
Sergey Brin and Larry Page met at college (Stanford) became grad school buddies and the rest is history!!
I'll explain my Google stance this way - work uses Google Apps, as does almost every other school district out there because it's free (go figure!) - so I'm pretty locked in there for the most part.
But in my personal life I try to keep myself as in Apple's ecosystem as I can because of the giants they're the least evil when it comes to data. Everything is anonymized - we didn't even go "smart speaker" route until the HomePod Mini (and now we have 3) - I like that you have to opt IN to data sharing by default (I have opted not to do that)
But it all started with Chrome. It eats all your memory and system resources. When I browse on my MacBook in safari, I get the 9-11 hours they advertise. When I browse in Chrome I get about 2.
Go away Google, you're drunk!
