I really wish news organizations would use the term Pro-Birth, instead of Pro-Life.Ā
There is little "Pro-Life" consideration about how the US currently supports a human life from conception through death in our states and across our country. Ā It is complete hypocrisy to mandate a child be born and yet not Ā support the pregnancy, birth, childhood, adulthood and senior years with universal healthcare for all ages, mental health programs, affordable housing, guarantied paid maternity leave, childcare, a good quality k-12 education . Ā
This was a "Pro-Birth" ruling only.Ā
@lovendures Ā Or "forced-birth," or "anti-choice." Liberals ceded a lot of the language related to reverence for life to these extreme wack jobs. We need to claw that back.
@dannyboyĀ Ā Honestly, I think every younger generation is attuned to the emerging issues of their time.Ā Baby boomers included.Ā Think of the 60's and the protests and the radical changes that were implemented with regards to women's rights, civil rights, peace activism, and environmental awareness.Ā
But as people get older, they tend to get bogged down with work, family and all the daily details of life and don't put their attentionĀ to wider issues, and indeed they may not have the time and energy to do so.Ā This will happen with Gen Y and Z too, I am sure.Ā But while they still have youthful energy and time to get things done, they will do so.Ā Ā
(FYI you *are* a younger man.Ā 😉Ā )
I wonder if we could take it a little easier on the generalizations about demographic groups including the elders. Iām entering the ātop of the seventh inningā and many of us in this group, having come of age in the 1960ās and 1970ās, are still doing all kinds of work to support change and turn away or possibly dissolve (what is the right metaphor?) the energy of domination and violence that has been with our planet for so long.
Doing pro bono mental health work to support young people struggling to make ends meet, writing and making art, helping our grown kids through 2020, doing things for our neighbors, growing food for the local food bank, advocating for the natural world, raising money for voter registration initiatives etc.Ā And yes Iridium, you are so right, we do get bogged down especially while raising families and then helping our parents. The seventh inning can be such a gift to us who have gotten there, with time and still the energy and inclination to do things
Thanks for allowing me to put this here, love this Forum. And apologies if this seems like a rant, I am a little undone today by the Supreme Court decision.
@marigold hugs! We are all undone today. Even though we knew it was coming (in some cases before the draft was released), we are still hurting with this cruelty.
Ā
Ā
@marigold Apologies - I had an entire paragraph discounting my āsell by dateā metaphor re: politics, because I felt it was harsh, but I deleted it to keep the post overall as brief as possible. Ā Iām a solid Gen Xer and I donāt want our generation thought of as apathetic and invisible (though boy do we have yet to come of age overall!) Iāll choose my words more carefully next time.
EDIT: Ā
@lovendures One of my all time favorite songs. And although I know every word of it I've never read it like a poem. Ā It's truly tugs at my heart.
Ā
I hope all the gents here realize that when I generalize about men on a day like today, I'm not including y'all. I do realize, as @lovendures says, that those here are not the same as those who either support or are ambivalent about today's ruling. I am technically a boomer, but I can't tell you what happened to my generation and those older. Those here of my generation tend to be more progressive, and still attached to their roots-civil & equal rights advocates, pro-choice, LGBQT supporters, etc. Too many boomers have gone off the rails somehow. I can only imagine it is from watching faux news. @marigold- I don't let the gripes about the boomers here get to me. They aren't referencing me specifically (similar to how I am not taking aim at the males here). I have been amazed over the years that the kids I once partied with now espouse philosophies and opinions that parrot my parents-the very sort of people these folks once rebelled against. I still have some friends from school days who are like me-not believing what we see and hear from so many of our generation, still holding fast to the ideas of our youth.Ā
@luminata, I agree, these wars you quote have been going on for quite some time. The war I don't see is the full on kind that has engulfed Ukraine (with the aid/ignorance of the red portions of our country). I do see a war at the polls, in commerce, in protests and in other more feminine ways. The woman scorned, and all that. Those cheering today-they won't see it coming-bless their hearts.Ā
Those of us here see that the court was packed by a political group with an aim. We know they refused to let Obama appoint someone when there was a vacancy. They can't abide by their own rules. Double standards, back alley deals, old boys networks, they don't think it's detectable as their base can't see it for what it is. We all see that five of these 'justices' were appointed by two presidents who lost the popular vote. We see that all of these 'justices' lied under oath to get their positions (claiming that Roe was precedent that shouldn't be overturned). We see that two of these justices are actual sexual predators. This decision will open the door for more of those who were thought the emperor actually had new clothes to see he's actually in his birthday suit. They won't be pleased at the sight.Ā
Yes to everyone's comments about age and gender generalizations here. There is a majority of people in this country who support abortion as healthcare. A cross section of all ages and genders are floored by this decision.Ā
Cindy, I get where you are coming from on the violence and I don't see a major war coming from this. Plenty of good trouble coming for the minority though.Ā
I think we'll hit them where it hurts them most - the wallet.
@dannyboy no apology needed though thank you...I also find it hard to take people criticizing younger people as a group- who are so hard working and dedicated and determined to work for change in whatever capacity in which they are engaged. The generations behind me are so brave.
