@journeywithme2 Best wishes for all to find the help needed. Those who have job insecurity, lack insurance, housing, mental health issues, etc., are such a vulnerable group. The odds are stacked against them, especially if the person doesn't want help, believe me I know.

@raincloud thank you for those words and thoughts. Uninsured and not enough income for that kind of care. Mental health programs to help have long ago fallen to the wayside here in Georgia.

The best we can hope for is Zoom online counseling ... which seems to be the way of the future.... low overhead so practitioners can make a living without the "office overhead".

I am just heartsick. I can not love him well. He has to want this... he has to act... I can not do it for him. He has to want it (he says he does) he has to take the actions... I can give him info ... leads for seeming help... but... he has to be the one to take action and do it. I know this. My mothers heart is filled with hope, with fear, with sadness, with love.... but none of that will do anything unless he chooses to act for himself.

That's true. One simple thought, there was a study of people with obsessive compulsive disorders who were shown their abnormal brain scans. They experience relief at understanding that they were not at "fault;" their brains were wired differently. I wonder if it would help your son to fully understand the physiology of addiction so he knows what must change. Dopamine depletion in the brain takes six months to replenish. During that six months, people experience "anhedonia," which means no pleasure. The lack of the ability to feel much pleasure for months makes the slog to sobriety tougher, but, if one knows there will be relief, it can help them to keep going. Just a thought, but knowledge is power and it might help him navigate a difficult path.

@raincloud He had a closed head brain bleed from a MVA at age 16. It was in the left frontal lobe ... the part of the brain that controls social behavior, impulse control etc. He was a preemie birth and has SLD ... dyslexia and ADHD. Also ... genetic components - alcoholics/drug addicts on both sides of lineage.
I pray he is able to overcome all of these challenges.

I also pray he is able to get a good local lawyer ( here in our red red county of good old boys) that is able to help him as well as and this doesn't ruin his future.

^this^  is probably the #1 reason that people fall off the wagon, even  when they really do want to change.  It might even take longer than 6 months. One thing for sure, folks who fall into addiction are not "bad" people. Often they are the kindest ones. But that is also the thing that makes it so hard for them in this world. Journey, I am late to this thread, but I am praying for you and your boy.    I do know of some strategies to fight off the dopamine deficit, and would be happy to share them with you, if you would like.

❤️
