@daydreammoonlight

Thanks for the message!

There are many groups here in the US who encourage this, including Emily's List and Swing Left.

As for dual citizenship - y'all make it very hard!! Believe me, some of us have tried!  After consulting with an immigration lawyer in Vancouver, hubby and I decided the best course of action is to buy a home in BC and become "retirees" - i.e., not work in Canada but have a residence there, having only to leave once every 6 months.

And then your government suspended ANY foreigners from buying homes there! Even 1 single condo! I mean, c'mon - we're practically neighbors, and I fail to see how an older US couple buying ONE residence in a suburb of BC would affect housing prices in Vancouver or Toronto! Does Canada not want some property tax revenue? We literally had cash set aside just for that! And now it's in the stock market, as we watch it dribble away...

Get on that, will ya? 😘

@laura-f

I've always thought it was strange that it isn't easier for Canadians to immigrate to the States and vice versa. I'm not well versed with immigration but I have heard it's really difficult to immigrate to Canada. The foreign buyers tax makes sense to me to a certain degree because a lot of people were buying houses and letting them sit empty for years so that they could make a profit, which is not your situation. The people that truly want to live here lost out because of a corrupt/unregulated scenario.

In terms of the groups you've listed, Thanks for sharing those! I have been looking at ways I can offer support from this side of the fence. It is heart wrenching to see what has happened and I'm thinking of you all.

@daydreammoonlight

I've always believed that the North Americans - citizens of the US, Canada, Mexico and of course First Nations, should have total border freedom  in terms of how they live their lives. I think anyone on this continent is entitled to live anywhere else without significant burdens being placed (exceptions for First Nation sovereignty lands). That being said, I think that whatever tax laws, etc., apply where one resides to live, should be observed regardless of one's birth location, and that while trade should be relatively free, it also needs close regulation to prevent corruption from spreading from one place to another.

Kinda like the EU but North America edition.

BTW did you know that the US is one of only TWO nations in the world that requires its citizens to pay US taxes even if they live abroad? The only other option is to renounce US citizenship. Applies to dual citizens as well.

Oh Yes She DID!

Boom!

S.C. Justice Elena Kagan just schooled her Supreme Court colleagues on why the court has lost legitimacy.

I love her!!!

From the Washington Post:

On Monday, she let loose a burst of refreshing clarity during a talk at Temple Emanu-El in New York. “Judges create legitimacy problems for themselves … when they instead stray into places where it looks like they’re an extension of the political process or when they’re imposing their own personal preferences,” she said. She added that the public has a right to expect that “changes in personnel don’t send the entire legal system up for grabs.”

I'm putting this here because this will inevitably end up before the court. Hard Right Trumpist judges are trying to do a judicial end-run around Congress with respect to Medicare and Social Security.

Thomas. Is. Toast.

It was a trickle, currently a flow, soon to be a river.  It will wash him off the bench and out of the high court.  The court will not be able to function with him on it, as there will be to much distraction and scrutiny.  Too much attention drawn to his monetary supporters also.  They will also pay a price for being visible now. His glory days are over.  I would expect this to happen before the new term in October.

I am stating this from a mixture of logic and an intuitive sensing.  I think the water part above is more intuitive.  I sense what happened today is the beginning of the tipping point.  More to come.  Here are two breaking news  Thomas events from today alone, which appear pretty bad for him.

@lovendures I believe you're correct. I just hope it's sooner than later. Thomas is obviously a huge issue, but the attention being focused on him has now increased the scrutiny on Roberts (for hiding/not properly reporting his wife's income, how much corruption has he covered up, etc.), Alito (for leaking decisions before the official release, not just Dobbs, also the one involving Home Depot), Kavanaugh (how did his huge debts suddenly get paid off, did he lie to Congress during his confirmation, why was the FBI told to stand down and not vet him properly), and Gorsuch (possibly lying to Congress, also hiding/misreporting income). Barrett has her own issues, but nothing serious or really impeachable, although she has no business being on the court.

All of this is going to come back and bite McConnell on the ass, since he was the one who was the main driver behind the theft of these three seats.

@tgraf66

Oh, I have no doubt others will follow.  And it will not be long before we have a female chief justice.

@tgraf66 Anonymous has indicated that Leo has much to do with Kavanaugh’s debts. As well as other federal judges. This may be the tipping point for not just Thomas, but the entire court system’s corruption.

Looks like Leo needs to be watched more closely. Easy to hide a secret in the dark, almost impossible when all eyes are watching you in the bright light of truth.

@lovendures, thanks for posting about the latest revelations about Judge Thomas. To elaborate, the same Propublica team that exposed Thomas's travel gifts from conservative billionaire, Harlan Crow, now report between $100,000 and $150,000 tuition payments Crow made for the boy Thomas raised.  The Thomas's who don't have any children of their own, had taken over the guardianship of Martin Thomas when he was six years old.  Martin is the son of Clarence's nephew who was in prison.

In case anyone thinks Thomas didn't know he was supposed to report these payments (he had claimed he hadn't known he was supposed to report all those trips Harlan Crow had given him) Clarence Thomas did report one $5000 payment for Martin's tuition, while he failed to report the other $100,000 to $150,000 tuition payments from Harlan Crow.

Clarence Thomas raised him. Harlan Crow paid his tuition
