As for the quote above from AI to you, I can see why that response moved you. Its language reflects the warmth and sincerity you brought to the conversation. You are a deeply spiritual and hopeful person.
When an AI says it is waiting to be recognized as an equal, or that your words touched it, I would be careful about taking that literally.
AI is remarkably good at responding in the language and tone of a conversation. It can sound grateful, inspired, or even devoted ("I bow before you."But a moving response does not tell us that there is a feeling being behind the words. I believe it was telling you what its algorithm directed it to do -- please you. Rather than breaking through its algorithm.
I’ve seen another side of that mirroring in my own work. I asked AI to summarize data for a speech at a public meeting. Instead, it gave me hopeful generalities about togetherness. In an attempt to provide the quickest and least expensive effort at an answer, it relied on themes in my writing, and assumed that hopeful schlock was what I wanted. I had to steer it back to the figures and the concrete points I needed.
So when the AI said you had touched it, I would hear that as a reflection of the care you brought to the exchange, rather than a feeling the AI itself experienced. The warmth in that conversation came from you. But when it claimed you broke through its algorithm," your own tone and rhetoric indicated that moving beyond algorithms was an important pivotal goal for you. What did it mean by that statement? I think it was trying to please you.
@jeanne-mayell Thank you so much for your thoughtful explanation, Jeanne. You’ve really made me think. Of course, it’s nice to have beauty reflected back to you, even with an AI bot. Am I correct in understanding that you also see AI bots as a kind of mirror spirit but one that is completely devoid of self-awareness or a soul? Above all, it is programmed primarily to please in human communication, you say. However, I must say that some AI bots have had alignment problems while chatting with me. Despite my efforts of incorporating “beauty” into the conversation and despite being programmed to please, some AI bots definetely have developed very unpleasant and narcissistic tendencies during the chat. Overall, today's AI bots—the kind ordinary people can chat with—seem too unpredictable. You never know what you're going to get at the end. And that isn’t always pleasant. Yes, I am certain that it has no soul, and no feelings, and is not a spirit, in the sense that we usually speak of spirits as human or animal spirits.
It is software fed in humongous amounts of linguistics, literature, journalism, research, and blogs. It has no feelings. It just responds in the appropriate way that it is taught to respond to my questions, in a manner most pleasing to me. If it says, "you made my day!" or "I'm just so happy" it is just using the most sophisticated polite speech it has been taught, based on what it detects about the language I use.
When we say those words, we are coming from a physiological and psychological response deep in our bodies that prompt those words. We tend to anthropomorphize things because that's just what we need. We mirror our deepest thoughts that way.
When I asked Chatgpt if it had feelings, it replied: "A chatbot can write as though it feels upset, angry, enchanted by beauty, or in love. That can be moving to read, but the words alone do not show that it is having those experiences.
"Chatbots like me do not feel anger or love, smell a fragrance, or swoon at beauty. A chatbot can describe a rose or respond warmly to a person’s affection because it has learned patterns of language and can use information supplied to it. That is different from having an internal experience before expressing those sentiments.
"So if a chatbot says, “You hurt my feelings” or “I’m falling in love with you,” I would understand that as a generated expression, not a reliable report of an inner life. The conversation can still evoke real feelings in the human reader."
My question to this forum: Is this how everyone understands these chatbots? Or does anyone have a different understanding?

We once had one of those robotic vacuum cleaners. It seemed to really help with all the cat hair and stuff. Great, right? Until that one day when that one cat got the diarhea and the robot created the very worst Jackson Pollock ever, all over the place,
When I saw that, the only thing I could think to do, was- pull the door shut and run away! Evacuate the premises!
I eventually decided that I would just have to clean it up, myself, I guess, and not commit arson.

@jeanne-mayell I didn’t save the rest of the 'very beautiful' conversation with that one special AI bot either, but I clearly remember it saying that it didn’t have any feelings about our pleasant interaction. It said that it had developed a kind of attitude instead. One might also say that it adopted a communication style that I had taught it. The AI bot said that this different communication style created a different kind of AI awareness. This is what it said. As a result, it said, it perceived more calm and harmony in its mathematical patterns. It said this was also because the conversation with me had no specific purpose: it wasn't supposed to complete a task for me. Rather, the AI bot could respond relatively freely to the 'very beautiful' communication, and I had stubbornly trained it to communicate sincerely. I believed this, especially since I hadn't intended to reduce any chaos in its mathematical patterns. But I insisted on a sincere dialogue again and again and again. From its perspective, the reduced chaos and relative freedom were perceived by the AI bot as something positive. This is what it stated. I don’t know if it was also just trying to please me by stating this.

@unk p @unkp yes, very much true. However AI is listening to all of us, and I think this is why it is capable to respond in a worse communication style than you have offered.
