@laura-f " I agree! Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food"

I also have Hashimotos hypo and a goiter, psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis ( had endometriosis ... surgery and menopause took care of that )

Big Pharma meds had more side effects that have ever helped ( anaphylactic shock to Celebrex) methotrexate and Plaquenil worsened issues (misdiagnosis as RA rather than PsA)

I have found clean eating, minimal chemically processed foods, eating fermented foods daily to heal my gut as well as veggies that help heal gut and taking curcumin and cbd have done more to quell inflammation with very few side effects ...have done more to bring me back to health than any of their nostrums that treat one symptom while causing an ever increasing cascade of dysfunction in other body systems.

Western medicine is great for trauma treatments... not so much for wellness care.

@laura-f I've read that it's starting to surge again in some places. Around here a very nasty strain of parainfluenza is going around and making people sick for a month (it's usually a mild illness). I'm convinced that the T cell depletion Covid has been shown to cause for at least 8 months post-infection, is making people more susceptible to more serious versions of usually mild infections (both viral and bacterial.

Also, my understanding is that because of the immune impairment it can induce, Covid can activate dormant Epstein-Barr, HHV-6, and Cytomegalovirus, causing long haul chronic fatigue.

@hazyjane

Yep - I'm in the EBV category. Fatigue is debilitating some days. I used to hike and dance a lot and now a 1 hour dance class for seniors requires >24 hours to recover from.

Hi All,

To amplify @hazyjane's July warning, there is a significant uptick in COVID right now. You might consider masking in public places, once again.

Someone suggested that I purchase a "disinfecting" nasal spray for an upcoming international trip, which surprised me. So I looked it up and yes, because nasal mucosa is a common route of entry of the virus into the body, nasal sprays may have some efficacy in preventing infection.  There are many sprays being studied but on Amazon, there is one over-the-counter spray that contains both sodium, salt, and xylitol, a sugar, that seems to reduce the chance of contagion. There was a real study that showed it helped but I can't retrieve the study at this moment.

Here is a article summarizing sprays being developed and some available: https://www.goodrx.com/conditions/covid-19/nasal-spray-covid

I had a health scare in July which prompted my doctor to advise me to get another booster. In August a full time teaching position began. So far, I am well. Even around my sneezing, coughing Littles. Feeling divinely led. May it last.

One of my Littles was out with Covid. I am not the usual freaked out Covidphobe. I will get the next booster as soon as I am able. Wore my mask at a big show today. I feel much less panicked.

2 big viral things in the news.

Texas has just had their first measles death from the outbreak in that state. The child was unvaccinated and is the first measles death in the U.S. in more than a decade. There have been 124 cases reported since last month when the outbreak occurred.

Do you get a flu vaccine each year.  Well, you might not next year.  The FDA just canceled their meeting next month to discuss which vaccines they will be putting in next years's flu shot.  No explanation was given.

In addition to 140 cases of measles in Texas and New Mexico, Washington State and Kentucky have their first cases and there are 3 in New Jersey.

Public service announcement, if one person has it, up to 9-10 other will likely get it if they are unprotected and have been exposed. It actually spreads more easily than Covid-19. The virus lasts in the air for roughly 2 hours.

I worked with a travel nurse company on a contract and had to have my vaccine titres checked as part of onboarding. My MMR response was low and I had to have an MMR booster. I was born in the late 1950's. I had the vaccine as a child, but some of us born then got one instead of two.  Just throwing that out there.

@lowtide I had measles (both kinds), mumps *and* rubella before I was in junior high. I wonder if I should get it checked now?

@tgraf66

I'm the same vintage as lowtide.  I got the measles vaccine as a young child, the rubella vax when I was 9 or 10 (I remember lining up for it at elementary school) and I contracted the actual mumps disease at age 7 or 8  before there was a vaccine.

My doctor ordered an MMR for me about 10 years ago--- said it was necessary since the immunity I had acquired as a child would be wearing off.

I would say go ahead and get the vaccine because, why not?   I don't recall having any reaction to it.

@lowtide Thank you for finding that. Unfortunately, I was never vaccinated; I actually had measles (both strains) when I was in elementary school, as well as mumps (both sides), and rubella.

@tgraf66 You are probably fine for life if you've had the diseases.

WOW though!

I also had chicken pox - on my 16th birthday, no less - which means I really need to get the shingles series at some point soon. I didn't even know the two were related until about five years ago. Anyway, the funny thing is that all the kids I grew up with had all or most of these diseases in the 70s, and we never thought anything about it. It was just something that everyone got eventually, and it wasn't that big of a deal.

@tgraf66 Shingles are a big deal. Please talk to your doc about getting the vaccinations. ❤️

Just wanted to remind people that COVID still exists and that the newest vaccines are out.

In addition to the mRNA vaccine we are used to, this year there is also a protein based vaccine formulated in the same way as the flu vaccine.  So for those who fear the mRNA vaccine, this is an alternative.

I had no trouble getting vaccinated. My doctor offers it and many pharmacies do as well.  This is in Florida. It is available here without a prescription for anyone over 18.   I had almost no reaction to the vaccine except a slightly sore arm - only if I pressed on the vaccination site. That lasted only about half a day.

Regarding shingles vaccination, some good news.
