Lots and lots of jobs are being canceled in the travel industry.
673 Marriott Headquarters, this on top of the 10's of thousands furloughed in March across the country.
800 at Universal Orlando Resort.
United Airlines will furlough 16,370 employees in October, down from an earlier target of 36,000 after thousands of workers took early retirement, buyouts, or long-term leaves of absence.
Home Depot is cancelling Black Friday and doing special sales over 2 months instead. This is partly related to covid and not wan't the mad rush in stores.
They are also canceling being open on Thanksgiving, meaning they will be closed for the Holiday as will Walmart. ( This is a welcome change IMHO.

Also closing this year (a Covid caused change) are:
Target
Kohl's
Bed Bath and Beyond
Dick's Sporting Goods
JCPenny
Most of these stores have not announced whether they will have Black Friday sales.
@laura-f, isn't that (curriculae nationwide) something that needs to be changed asap? Or is there no hope due to the north/south, democrats/republicans, holding onto power/independence etc. divide? Not to mention idiot costs of education. In all 3rd world countries the UN knows that education is the key. It's one of the first things they try to change (girls to school etc) and yet it is in this state in the US.... so sad.
This is how one large university in Boston is going to change the partying behavior of students: At Northeastern College in Boston, the school just dismissed without refund 11 students who, after many warnings from the school about a no-party rule this semester, were caught partying in a room with no masks and no social distancing within three days of arriving on campus. They were sent home immediately and parents not refunded the $35,000 paid for the semester.
All of these students were warned multiple times before arriving on campus. They all had to attend a student town meeting about the new rules, and sign statements that they understood the rule and the dismissal, no refund, consequences. I guess they didn't think the school was serious.
I am certain other universities around the country are watching and taking note.
As someone who taught and worked in the ed systems in several states, I personally have zero hope of it changing in my lifetime. Individual states have too much power. What power the federal government has in terms of national education has only been used for malfeasance for the last 50-60 years. The name UNITED States is quickly becoming an oxymoron.
Covid related University strikes are beginning to happen.
Graduate student instructors at the University of Michigan will continue their strike after rejecting an initial offer from the Ann Arbor university.
On Wednesday night, more than 1,250 members of the University of Michigan’s Graduate Employees' Organization (GEO) gathered online to discuss the offer, according to a release.
A proposal by the university to end the strike was supported by GEO leadership, but members ultimately rejected the university’s offer saying that it did not meet their demands.
“Membership decided by an overwhelming majority that the university’s offer did not constitute continued progress on these demands,” the release states.
“GEO members will continue to withhold labor over these demands and encourage our allies to join us on socially distanced in-person and remote picket lines,” the release states.
The strike was initially planned to last four days.
The strike has received support from undergraduate students, U-M resident advisors, Ann Arbor community members and student organizations from other universities. The University of Michigan’s Lecturers' Employee Organization (LEO) released a statement Monday saying that the COVID-19 testing plan is inadequate, and that they support GEO’s decision to strike.
GEO members have been on strike since Tuesday, Sept. 8
Student residence hall staff at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor have gone on strike over what they say are insufficient coronavirus protections.
The strike, which started on Tuesday, Sept. 8, is happening alongside a strike by U-M graduate student instructors and graduate student staff assistants protesting the university’s return to in-person education.
According to a news release, the student workers have several demands relating to the university’s coronavirus protections and policy enforcement including:
- Regular access to testing for all of residence staff
- Sufficient and effective personal protective equipment for staff and students
- Enforcement of social distancing and face coverings inside and outside of residence and dining halls
- Hiring and staffing to normal capacity for all facilities and housing teams
- Hazard pay for residence staff
- Formal no retaliation statement from U-M Housing Administration if a ResStaff Union is formed
Oh Canada!
Oh cruise ships and cruise ship ports in Oh Canada.
Canada once again extended its ban on cruises – pushing back the possibility for large passenger vessels to sail in Canadian waters by an additional year after shutting them out last year amid the coronavirus pandemic.
No cruise ships will be able to sail in Canada until March 1, 2022.
Today, I announced a 1-year ban on pleasure craft in Canadian Arctic waters and cruise vessels in all Canadian waters, these prohibitions will protect the most vulnerable among our communities and avoid overwhelming our health care systems," Minister of Transport for Canada Omar Alghabra wrote on Twitter Thursday.
WOW! Well, Japan just cancelled ALL overseas spectators for the Olympics this summer. Not even family can come watch. They are going to lose untold amounts of money. How sad for the athletes.
This just in: New Orleans Jazz Fest for 2021 is Cancelled again.
They cancelled 2020, moved 2021 to October (it's usually in April), and now cancelled that. It's a shame, but LA has the highest rate of Delta infection in the world right now.
I've been many times, but don't plan on returning til 2023 at the earliest.
I fail to understand why they couldn't create an online streaming event as a fundraiser for the many artists who are losing out.
