Animals Stories that Uplift Us

This happened a while back but it's so amazing that if you haven't read it, it is worth it now. I once saw a YouTube of some people who freed a whale tangled in fishing gear. Afterwards, she did a thank-you victory dance in the water for them. I'll find it and link it.

But this story is even more special.

A female gray whale had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighed down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line tugging in her mouth.

A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farallon Islands (outside the Golden Gate) and radioed for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so badly off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her…. a very dangerous proposition. One slap of the tail could kill a rescuer. They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her. When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, nudged them, and pushed gently, thanking them.

Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives. The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth says her eye was following him the whole time, and he will never be the same.

May you be so fortunate … To be surrounded by people who will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you. And, may you always know the joy of giving and receiving gratitude.

Here is an adorable little video I made of my dog and our kitten when they were still babies. https://vimeo.com/219540053 They made up a game of tag that is incredibly cute.  @unk-p, this is the same kitty you painted for me.

I love how my pets made up this adorable game to hone their ancestral survival skills, i.e., hunting and defending.  The puppy is making quick numerous fake bites on the kitten's soft underbelly - something wolves do to bring down their prey.  The kitten fixates her eyes always on her adversary at all times, even when she is flipped over and upside down. One on one, the puppy might be outmatched, even though she is much larger.

@jeanne-mayell - Oh my goodness, your cat is the spitting image of our late departed cat, Duke.

Love in the animal world.  Did you know that 90 percent of birds are monogamous?  And also field mice and wolves, among many other species?

@lovendures I know!  I finally stopped using snap traps on the mice that come into our house. There is an effective have a heart mouse trap.  You still end out separating them from their families but at least they survive. The best protection however, according to mice experts, is to find the entry they use to get into your house and seal it! We are working on that too.
