Re Ides of March: On October 1st I posted under this forum that I received the following message "Beware the Ides of March." I was thinking about T. and the message popped into my head. It looks like many of us are on the same psychic page re March. And March couldn't come soon enough, as far as I'm concerned!
Interesting op-ed by Andrew Sullivan in New York Magazine . Sullivan tends to the very conservative side, but since 2016 has been warning everyone about Dipshit Donnie.
just want to say - I know everyone will hate me, but I'm in tears right now. I was just on a Facebook board -dozens of people -- dozens -- on a nonpolitical board, I might add, talking about the waste of time hearings. There is nothing illegal it's all hearsay - why are they wasting our time with this, that horrible woman Pelosi - this is every person and it's a board about television - they're all terrified those mean Socialist Democrats are going to destroy our freedoms. TERRIFIED. Trump has done more for this country in a couple of years than Obama did in 8. And believe me, they consider that a positive remark. 56 percent of people according to what I read think he will be re-elected. I sat there with my jaw on the ground. People were actually asked what they would do if he shot someone, and the answer was, it depends on who he shot. Right now I'm so upset I don't know where to turn. I keep asking myself, how is this possible. But it is.
You are on the wrong website. Clearly not everyone thinks or feels this way - otherwise 2018 blue wave, and just last week Kentucky & Virginia elections would have been different. The Women’s March wouldn’t have happened- nor the whistleblower or the sky high ratings of Rachel Maddow’s Show. But it is also obvious, that a larger group than I would like to admit are frogs in boiling water. When I hear them speak of the current political climate I feel like I am in Wonderland... everything is topsy turvy. I do not know how to convince others to really think through their positions...and the evil this man has perpetrated. I think truly it comes down to our culture’s isolation, focus on personal responsibility ( no one does EVERYTHING on their own), the idolatry of money, and lack of empathy. When you posed the question about shooting someone on 5th Ave. ... they said it depends on who? Yes, lack of empathy. I see a lot of scared people strutting with false bravado in a world moving too fast & looking to make it someone else’s fault & a strong man to come in and fix it. As if in the history of the world that had ever worked? I must say I get frustrated too- not sure how to reach them. They too have free will & I really don’t know... But there are many people who do see the darkness & danger & they (we) are making some noise too! ❤️ Hang tough.
Facebook is a cesspool. I left it about 18 months ago and never looked back. It’s shocking to hear those opinions and comments you encountered, but I understand that is reality for the hard core Trump cultists. It just boggles the mind. Kicking Facebook to the curb is an option.
@bluebelle and @Shawn Thank you both so much. I think given everything that is going on now, it was just a shock to read those awful comments. And if I told you what board it was on you'd laugh yourselves sick. I need to be on FB for business reasons but I've cut way down. I get afraid that by hanging with people who think like I do, that I, not them, am in Wonderland. I look forward to the November 11 readings. There are some very gifted people on this site. I know in the end it will all be well, but I hope to live to see it.
Hi @ Suspira44
I don’t hate you for mentioning this. It is the reality of a divided nation right now. The conversations that were going on sound like they are from people who were already supporters of the orange menace. Non political board or not, they are touting right-wing talking points that I hear from Fox News-watching family members. Are these people that you personally know or are they just people/bots on a message board that post on a subject that interests you? What I am trying to say with this is, are these people whose opinions you value? It is disappointing that there are so many people that are expressing a willingness to let criminality go on in exchange for whatever it is that they think they are getting out of it, but that doesn’t change the fact that it is criminality and it is wrong. As I told a dear family member recently on my last trip to the US, this is no longer about politics, it is about morals and what is wrong and what is right. They can say that the hearings won’t change anything, but I remember when there were hearings about what Nixon and his people did and it very much did change people’s minds and opinions. Don’t be discouraged for believing in justice and not putting up with criminality. It will take time, but justice will be done in the end. Don’t lose hope, just take care of yourself and regain your strength for the next round.
I'm sorry you had to go through that.
I took a 9 month hiatus from FB. On my way out the door I cut my friend list in half (to under 100). I left every single group except for the 2 or 3 that are personal friend based or that focus on positive things. Nothing political and certainly if the group is not run by someone I know personally I don't need to be in it. I never had the FB app on my phone, but did have FB messenger. I deleted it (and have not put it back on my phone).
When I went back on, I told everyone I would NOT be engaging in political discussions on FB. I use it to keep in touch with old friends, and also with newer local ones for whom FB is the fastest way to share local info, events, etc. I am a big user of the SCROLL-BY. I don't comment on stuff I don't like or that is highly negative, I just scroll on by and look at more positive posts. I also told everyone that email is better than messenger because I check email often.
FB is a total cesspool. Half of those trolling you are probably in a bot farm in Russia. FB is mostly a forum for racism, misogyny and real fake news. It's also addictive (no joke). Limit how long you are on it each day - I limit it to 2 15 minute sessions - morning and night.
As for members of "The Base" - well, even if some of them are real, human, Americans, actual psycho-social research has shown you can't change their minds.
A few months back I was the subject of a racial verbal attack. When I shared it on NextDoor.com, I was shocked at how many people attacked me, the victim. This was serious enough that I did get the police involved (they were lovely about it). So I shut off the ability for anyone to reply to my post, and I haven't been back on since. F*em.
Lastly, a strategy I used to use when needed: if the people flaming you are replying to your comment - DELETE it and then repost it. It will remove all their replies. Repeat as necessary.
very sorry to read you were a victim of a racial verbal attack. It's awful. I actually did not respond to any of these posts. I happen to know the moderator - she's actually a very sweet woman, but it seems she has bought into a lot of this Democrats are awful stuff. And she let these posts continue, which surprised me. I am taking a trip starting on Wednesday and will just have my phone - I won't be on FB!
I do not value the opinion of anyone who is a Trump supporter. So the answer is - whoever they are, I don't value their opinions! That doesn't mean I haven't read some things that upset me - like that 56% think he will be re-elected. And you know why that is - the Democrats have yet to come up with someone who can win. I support the Democrats, I'm one myself, but let's face it - either we have horrible candidates, and if we don't, the election is stolen. I don't care if Curly Howard is nominated but I think other people want to feel confident in the nominee.
