@lovendures they eat brush... and hay and grains. Depends on if you are raising for milk (dairy goats) or meat... or .. as mine.. pets and brush control.
Supposedly the shortage in the wet food is due to the lack of aluminum to make the cans that go in it.
Let's talk baby formula.
I don't know if we have anyone on our forum who is impacted by this shortage but oh my goodness it is getting dire out there isn't it?
Saying a prayer that those who are in need, find help to get their infants what they need. This is really a tough place to be right now.
My local Walgreens didn't even have a shelf sticker for formula anymore. Not sure if they moved any product they may have behind the counter or not. They did that during covid with T.P. when they received stock.
I noticed lots of empty shelves regarding pet food at Walgreens also but there was a good supply at my Sprouts.
Also another shortage related to children, baby sitters. According to the Wall Street Journal, baby sitters are hard to come by and are charging between $15 and $30 an hour. Even more. Parents are just happy to find one.
( I see what you did there making the word minimum. haha
Ok. Now let's talk gas prices.
You would think this is a big shortage because of the high prices, but it isn't in short supply. It is easy to find. AZ has a HUGE shortage of gas over a decade ago where you waited in line hours to get gas or had to follow a gas truck around until they went to a station of fill the storage tanks.
This is different.
I expect higher prices because of the war. I understand it. I am willing to pay higher prices and modify how I drive, be more mindful.
I don't know how they can justify how these prices are rising. In a 10 day time period, prices at my neighborhood pump rose 40 cents, I thought that was a bit crazy. $4.59 to $4.99. Then it held for 2 days at $4.99 before jumping ( get this) 20 cents to $5.19. I literally ran errands in the morning and it was one price and ran additional errands in the afternoon and it was 20 cents higher. HOW DOES IT GO UP 20 CENTS ?
So, in a 12 day period, it has gone up 60 cents. That is 5 cents a day.
I am beginning to think that the reason we go all electric vehicles is because of this gas (price) crisis.
Oh, I was not very thrilled the last time I got gas either. There was a sticker of Trump on the gas pump pointing to the gas price saying: "Biden did that!" My daughter told me her gas station 40 minutes away from our house has the same thing on one of the pumps.
Why do people need to make a bad situation worse???
I was actually pretty upset about it.
@lovendures I know there are different formulas in baby and body building, but they are both powder, and protein. Could they use those as a starting point?
@elaineg People should not perform experiments with baby formula concoctions or we are going to be hearing stories of infant deaths.
Parents should consult their pediatrician and use science based advice. Here's an article: Experts say it's a bad idea to make homemade baby formula: https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2022/05/20/baby-formula-shortage-homemade-recipes-scams/9828326002/
..."watering down formula to make it last longer is dangerous and can lead to dehydration and seizures.
“Whole milk is OK for a short period of time (if the baby is) over 6 months of age, but again talk to your pediatrician and make sure you're doing it in a safe way," Denenberg said. "And the same thing with soy-based milk. We certainly are discouraging people from doing homemade formulas. There are all kinds of recipes out there on social media.”
Wow!
There is now a tampon shortage. Actually many feminine hygiene products are in short supply.
Here is an updated list of looming shortages that could effect the rest of the year.
Tomato products (ketchup, pasta sauce, salsa) - drought in west effecting tomato crop.
Corn and corn products (cereal, corn syrup, popcorn, oil)- due to high heat, little rain and insect infestation in many U.S. corn producing states.
Olive oil- Due to heatwave in Europe.
Chick Peas- due to war in Ukraine, flooding in Australia and Mexico.
Turkey- due to bird flu and higher production costs
Beer and many frozen foods such as pizza- due to lack of CO2 supply
Tires- due to low rubber production
@lovendures Also, in our area - potatoes. 2021 was bad year for potatoes and it's potatoes were running sold through August. New crop begins to hit market during mid-September..expect much higher prices when well back in stock. I just paid 9.00 and change for a 10 lb bag. Fruits and veggies are at a premium and of lower quality than usual. I have stocked up on rices, dried beans, pastas, canned tomatoes, flour, canned milk, powdered milk etc. etc.. i.e. all the pantry basics.
I also predict a hard winter for my area, Jan and Feb ..we will see a lot of mixed precip. Our area is prone to ice storms. Haven't had one in years... this Fall feels a lot like it felt in the late 60's and I remember some doozies of ice/snow/sleet problems. We just don't have the power grid/roads responses for it here in the South.
I think these last 3 months of 2022 are going to be a lot to deal with ...and just feel comforted knowing I have food to feed and house my family and my animals for these days ahead to a brighter 2023.
@journeywithme2 Hey! You've been quiet lately.
Months ago there was a short thread on growing potatoes and I mentioned I was trying to grow sweet potatoes by sprouting a store-bought sweet potato but I never followed up This is FYI in case anyone wants to try....
It worked. I've been digging sweet potatoes out of the little Earth Box for months now and the plants are still alive and making more all the time. Since the plants are in a container, the sweet potatoes are not deep and I just have to dig around with my hands until I find one, then I carefully dig it out by hand and cut the root attaching it without disturbing the rest of the root system.
Sweet potatoes are one of the highest calorie-to-acreage crops in the world. That, and rice.
I went to the store and can confirm that canned tomatoes were in short supply, they had fresh, and the deli had a sign saying it had no sliced turkey. That was for fresh sliced. There was pre packaged available but no store brand packaged.
@journeywithme2, good to see you friend.
It's been a rough summer! Finally on the road to recovery and feeling much better.
i was just thinking the other day that there has been a shortage of @journeywithme2 posts. Was about to page you and ask you to pls pick up the white courtesy phone in the Revolving Lounge, lol. Glad you are feeling better ❤️

Such brave women. Thank you for sharing the fiag @Unk-p
Thank you for the shortages warning. (Since the glitches started, I don't have a 'like' button). The potential for tire shortages prompts this post.
When I was about 12 years old, a looong time ago, I was in a large department store where they were demonstrating a number of products. One product on display was a pair of nylon stockings that didn't run. Even when punctured and sliced, one could not produce a run in the nylon. For male readers, nylons often run and tear the first wear out of the package but apparently it is a deliberate feature so we will buy more.
I don't know if it was in the same event or whether I read or heard it later but in the 1940s, someone produced a tire that either would not puncture or wouldn't deflate. Tire disposal is a large environmental problem.
I hope we are ending the era of planned obsolescence; our poor planet can't handle it.
I have noticed intermittent shortages of random things this year.
Canned cat food
Cat litter
Organic salad dressing
Mayonnaise
Windshield cleaner fluid
Worcestershire sauce
Organic sliced chicken (packaged)
Cream cheese
@ana Those 2 herniated discs and left side sciatica as well as my PsA flares and allergies got the best of me for several months there... I am grateful for all of the love, prayers, thoughts and supports that were sent my way. I needed and heeded my body's call to focus my attention and give self-care and healing to my Self. I am doing much better and building back up muscle tone from loss and activities of meditation, massage, chiropratic and nutritional modalities. An uncomfortable personal situation has been addressed so that boundaries are now being seen and enforced and honored.
As an empath and precognition individual, living where I do, I did have to disconnect and time out to focus on my healing and replenish my reserves, while honoring my responsibilities as much as possible.
I periodically checked in here on site, but had little input to offer during this time period - hugs and I am glad to be back :-)
@laura-f Being responsible for 8 cats (4 ferals that I TVNR and feed) I noticed the rise and shortages in all cat care sectors LOL and I recall the mayo and cream cheese shortages here too. Those have been fine currently ... but.. the holidays once again approach . There is still issues surrounding baby formula availability too. Isn't it ironic that formula and baby care products , are having shortages as well as inadequate health care, while Republicans push no abortions for any reason at any time.... yet do nothing to further getting these products/services in ample availability to all mothers to be, mothers, babies already here?
@lovendures So good to be back! and feeling more like myself again! I am a poor patient I confess, irascible and impatient. I was being the shown the need for self-care as much as care given to others.
I periodically stopped by but had little to contribute at the time.
