@jackofhearts When I was young, I often saw idealized "educational" films (especially at Disney parks) in which we were told that robots and computers would do all of our work for us and that we would then have almost infinite time for leisure. The question that always occurred to me then - and which I asked several times and received only dismissive answers at best - was "if robots and computers do all of our work for us, how do we make money to live and buy things?" I'm still asking that question, and I'm still getting non-answers. The problem is that now, that future is taking shape, and the consequences of a no-income economy are staring us in the face. Although I'm pretty well retired now, I'd still like to know the answer to that question.

The current system is predicated on people opting to show up for work and delay instant gratification, produce with the more productive, the more one earns an income - money is the medium of exchange. Works great until AI and technology change the paradigm, which would be the first real fundamental shift in 6000 years, give or take a century or two. (There are multiple names used over the years, social cohesion, morals and ethics were added )
Post this phase then I have to think life long learning becomes the norm for humans, but not learning for the sake of learning, instead learning for the purpose of improving self and contributing more to society, and should the become bored instead of being fearful of change, fully immersing into it and finding a new way to fill fullfilled, and thus contribute.
What does the economic system look like? Money probably remains for scarce resources, c; contribution to the whole gets some value; capability multiplies that, along with reputation. However you want to keep them seperate, "social credit" has tended to fail, see Goodhart's law for why. This is where I like Nash and game theory. If people don't have to "survive", they will tend to what interests them, and in doing so will do that better. This creates a loop.
Which means we arrive at what may be the first question, what incentive mechanism can replace "economic necessity"
For me, the model is pretty simple, create a true golden circle where people who benefitted from something, turn around and willingly support and use that something, and people start to see it happen.

@jackofhearts I really like the way you're thinking about this. One thing I wonder about, though, is whether we can assume that the wealth created by AI would automatically become accessible to everyone. If ownership of AI and productive resources remains concentrated, people could potentially lose work without necessarily gaining a share of the wealth that replaces it. So perhaps how that wealth is distributed is a question to address before we get to what replaces economic necessity as an incentive.
@tgraf66 I seem to have found a possible solution to the future distribution of wealth for ordinary people who are unemployed and have a lot of leisure time. Not even Disney and their 'educational' programmes had this visionary solution about how all these people can make money on a regular basis. The soulution involves autonomous LLMs that periodically steal credit cards from the wealthy and distribute funds to people's accounts every month, much like Robin Hood. @lowtide, Terrifying and important. Also concerning because my cousin Andrew Posey has been seeing a game changing pandemic coming for several years now. I didn't think about it much since we can see all kinds of events long term, but now a biological pandemic AI attack is thought to be the easiest way for a terrorist to harm a large number of people.
I am now visualizing protection and safety for all of us in this world. Angels overseeing this planet and letting us continue to evolve and live peacefully with kindness to all creatures.
