@lovendures Well done, you had me at Twas... How was Austin otherwise? People out and about?
that's happened to us about 3 times as well, never in a pandemic though!
Glad it was nothing serious, and that despite the wee hour and being startled, other guests remained mindful.
Replying to you here on the more appropriate thread.
Just to reiterate - my immune system is not stellar. Moving to sunny San Diego has been a boon - I don't get sick nearly as much, also I don't work anymore and my daughter has grown up, all things that make it less likely for me to get sick (I used to get sinusitis and/or bronchitis about 4 times a year back East, and if the flu shot was off by one mutated gene, I'd get the flu too, albeit a milder case).
This was the sickest I have been in over 20 years.
Thanks!
The are definitely people out and about here. Many at parks but not over crowded. Not too busy at Target , Whole Foods, Kohl’s and Sprouts, more busy at Walmart. Restaurants are open for in person dinning and outdoor. Some were outside but lots of empty tables. Downtown Austin was quiet. Went to Georgetown and it was rather quiet too so I would say things are open but I would think 30 -50 % quieter than would be normal. There is a street in downtown filled of store after store of bars mixed with tattoo parlors. They are all boarded up with artists spray painting murals and “ art” on the plywood. Our hotel is pretty quiet. One or two others on our floor.
all cities I have been in require masks and people are mostly respectful.
@lovendures oh wow, i didn't know your daughter was moving to Austin! Now i don't feel so bad for her having to move to TX, lol. I don't know what Austin is like these days, but when i lived there in the 80's, it was deeply weird and wonderful. And the very first Whole Foods was in a little old converted house a couple of blocks from me. It sold no meat products, and had very few yuppies shopping there. Mostly hippies and new wave/ punk rockers.
Most of the big cities in TX are more progressive than you would think. The only major city here that Hillary didn't win was Fart Worth. But Austin has always been a mecca for people who don't fit in to the dumb little towns and suburbs they grew up in. Hope she has as much fun as i did there.
I am feeling good about her being here, especially since I have finally had the opportunity to look a little around the area now. Her apartment is lovely. It has a courtyard which reminds me of an English garden with trees that are blooming pink flower blossoms . A pond is directly across her quiet street and she can see it from her balcony. Birds soar around the water at dusk and turtles can be seen in the water.
The new school (which is finishing being built and where she will teach when things eventually open back up fully) is absolutely incredible. It is huge too, with tons of windows, lots of light, stone walls and a thoughtful design. It is surrounded by grass and trees and is very peaceful.
The mom in me wishes she was a one day drive from home so we could visit more easily of course.
She followed her gut on the apartment and the move in general. I must give her credit for that. I was being guided to suggest she apply to the district she applied to and later received the job offer from. I guess it was a big confirmation on heeding our intuition.
Today I am home, quarantined in a bedroom, with nearly all the Covid symptoms. I wasn't into my new job a week before a coworker left work Friday to get a Covid test. (Seems she went to a July 4 party where someone had the virus.) On Monday she came back into the office, and she and I worked on a project handling hundreds of plastic badges together before she was abruptly asked to leave. Apparently our supervisor didn't tell her to stay home until she got negative test results. I had no clue and found out from a coworker later. Yesterday I felt funky and asked a couple bosses if the office had been exposed to Covid. I was told it's a private matter. Am I wrong to be livid?
@jewels
Wrong to be livid?
Not at all. They might need to keep the person's identity private but for goodness sakes, if the county isn't contact tracing, work should do it if they know. I am aware of some large businesses who do their own contact tracing within the work place and this has lessoned infections for sure.
I am so sorry. I hope you feel better soon and that you can get quick test results.
@jewels I am so sorry. It boggles the mind that those in charge of your workplace would not meet their obligation to keep workers reasonably safe! They can absolutely do so without divulging sensitive information. I agree with you - I would be furious. I hope you feel better soon.
@jewels so sorry that your work supervisors are not taking better safety precautions. It’s ok to be upset, everyone need to work together to keep each other safe during these strange times. I’m sending you lots of warm and healing energy.
share the love and light
We did wear masks, and I distanced from her. She wanted to work together at one table, which is a no-no. I get my test results back tomorrow. I realize I could have picked it up somewhere else. And maybe it's just an ordinary bug. But if not, I've got an urge to be a snot and tell my boss that my test results are private.
@jewels
I'd be livid too.
Your employer should have:
a) sent the sick employee home until TWO negative tests more than 2 months apart
b) informed all employees of COVID exposure
c) closed the office for a week
d) during that time, deep disinfecting cleaning should be done
e) notified the local dept. of health
If these things are not being done, you should contact your local dept. of health and drop a dime on your employer anonymously. Make up a fake name if they ask you.
More importantly - are you able to get access to COVID testing where you live? You might have to make an appointment, so don't wait til you're too sick.
The vitamin D suggestion is a good one, also try to use steam at home to ease your breathing. Do you have an at-home finger oxygen monitor? They're pretty cheap on Amazon and most pharmacies have them. If your oxygen saturation goes below 90% consistently, you need to go to urgent care and get nebulized and/or oxygen treatment. Ask a doctor about antihistamines, too, it may improve symptoms and also reduce some of the inflammation ( and certain ones will help you sleep)
If your fever lasts longer than 3 days, and if you start experiencing hallucinations, go to the ER. If you get short of breath for longer than a minute, go to urgent care, demand an x-ray. At the least they might be able to give you some antibiotics and steroids - it won't cure you but it might make you feel better and reduce your risk of death.
Site is being weird - here is second half of my post:
Also - do not lie down for extended periods. If you have a comfy chair in your house, try to spend more time in that than in bed, and every hour or so get up and walk around the house. This will help prevent pneumonia to some extent. If you can sleep in a comfy chair, even better, and if not, experiment with your positioning in bed. When I was sick, oddly, and for the first time ever, I found it easier to breathe laying on my stomach than on my back.
Make sure you write down your wishes - you have a living will? Put it by your purse, but if not, at least write something down and sign it. Sorry to be so dark - but these matters bear reflection before worst case scenarios are in full play, you don't want family members to have to make decisions not know what you'd want if you lose consciousness.
I have allergies that come and go, and multiple times in the last few months I woke up thinking "this is it". It's so frightening. My heart goes out to you. When you feel better, consider talking to an employment lawyer, before Twitler et al pass anti-liability laws "you might be entitled to compensation".
Be well asap.
@Jewels, I'd be livid at the co-worker! It is absolutely common sense to protect others while waiting for the results of a test. What did your co-worker expect would happen to others?
At any rate, anger doesn't help you right now.;-/ I so hope it is not Covid, but if it is please take good care of yourself. The US is not a good place to have this right now;-( I'd suggest eating well, taking a lot of rest and take in sun shine. Other than that, hoping against all hope it isn't Covid.
Sending good vibrations your way. ❤️
@jewels I'm not a doctor, but I will tell you what helped with me. Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Zinc, Quercetin(essentially the red in fruits and vegetables)(or eat more red berries, and red apples see below), n-acetyl l cystein (NAC)(mucolitic makes you cough up phlegm)(or eat more kale, broccoli, cauliflower, see below), elderberry, and multivitamin, worked for me. Make sure you have regular strength aspirin just in case. You'll have to walk and do breathing exercises there are videos on Youtube for that. Limit walking to 20-30 minutes a day any more is counterproductive. Stay on your stomach as much as you can. Water with lime, or lemon. Chicken soup still works. Berries all kinds: strawberries, blueberries, cherry's. Apples are awesome. Kale and broccoli are awesome, raw and organic is better. Keep a pulse oximeter, under 94 consistently, go to the hospital. If you can sleep, sleep. Sardines are good too. Chicken and fish, the only meat I ate. Don't have sugar, it will make it worse, and limit carbs. No processed foods. Eggs are your friends.
@jewels absolutely not wrong. In fact your supervisor is acting irresponsibly. The entire office should quarantine until everyone’s tests come back. The would be the responsible and caring thing to do. I hope you are ok. Sending up positive prayers for you.
