Michael Lewis (Liar's Poker, Moneyball and more) wrote an e-book about how private companies are using US gov. public data to create money-making weather forecasting companies, Accuweather being one example. However unfair it may be to use taxpayer funded research to create a service that we then eventually pay for, I vaguely recall he said they have improved some aspects of the final weather reports but I should double check.

@raincloud I know that it is much hotter than posted where I am. A solar powered thermometer states it is at least five degrees higher. Unsure about elsewhere.

Yes. But I am not sure that the NWS is downplaying forecasts, as you hypothesize. They have had huge cuts in staffing and equipment, though.
I haven't used any alternatives, but have read that Windy.com, with the ECMWF model selected. ECMWF is the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, an independent intergovernmental European organization. It produces global forecasts, including for the United States, using its own forecasting system. ECMWF now makes its real-time forecast catalogue openly available.
So if you do start using the alternatives, let us know if you notice any difference in forecasts from the National Weather Service.
On Windy, you can select ECMWF rather than NOAA's GFS. Windy also lets you compare several models side-by-side—including ECMWF, NOAA/GFS, and Germany's ICON model. That is particularly useful for your question: if NWS says the high will be 96°, while ECMWF and ICON are both predicting 101–102°, that is something worth noticing. Conversely, if all three predict roughly 96°, there is little reason to suspect the NWS number has been deliberately moderated.
Meteoblue is another comparison site because its “MultiModel” page puts many forecasts together. For Boston, for example, it currently displays forecasts from ECMWF, Germany's ICON, NOAA's GFS/NAM/NBM and several other systems separately. So you can deliberately ignore the NOAA models and look at ECMWF and ICON.

@spc789 thank you for telling us all about it, and welcome to the forum.we’re gonna have to get used to using alternative sources of climate data.
that is a hit for me, because I had foreseen that employees who had been fired would start their own forecasting and well at least climate related site. in the national parks, fired employees started their own alternative website, which has been great information for people.
NOAA still has one of the worlds if not, the world’s most well equipped labs. It’s just that they are under reporting the data or they are hiding it in plain sight so people can look it up if they know where to look. NOAA did shut down the Hawaii laboratory that has been the main source of tracking greenhouse gases in the atmosphere upon which scientists have been relying to determine how much or how thick the carbon blanket is.
I do wonder what the billionaires and fossil fuel executives and others, are thinking when they shut down this information. yes it means profits for them but at what cost to themselves? I think that they believe they can build alternative communities that will survive climate change, even though it will kill huge amounts of the population, plants, animals.

There is a 1927 movie Metropolis which pretty much predicts how they think things can be managed as our climate will challenge us in ways they we cannot imagine and they will not be able to solve.
Even if the elites manage to winnow down the population to a subservient level to run their world, those remaining may not be cooperative to say the least.
If they can fabricate an alternative living environment to allow their survival, human conflict & friction will certainly override anyone's financial status and then they/we are back where we started.
At the moment the future looks less bright than the past has been but I'm still looking forward.
@jeanne-mayell I think that the ICON maps for temperature are more accurate. I will double check when it gets hotter again. There has been a slight break in heat, so I am enjoying it while it lasts.
I keep seeing Jon Ossoff as a contender for President. I started seeing before the hype and polls started seeing it. He resonates to me. I thought it was just him being from Ga. but every time I see him, I feel future. I cannot remember who made the prediction about a brown-haired man they did not know being significant. I will search that. I also feel the blonde woman who brings Trump down is Natalie Harper. The relationship may do it.
