- The Vatican is in the news. (Teri)
The world has a new Pope. An American. Pope Leo XIV. A social justice Pope.
Amazing.
Last night I was meditating on the future with my cousin, Andrew, and I got that a new pope would follow Frances' footsteps. I knew the decision was coming soon because of something one of the non voting Cardinals had told a CBS news anchor who was on the scene at the Vatican.
I didn't post it here because, well, I've felt so overwhelmed at all the bad news lately that I couldn't believe I was getting such good news from spirit!
Silly me!
I am delighted at this new pope who has dedicated much of his life to helping the poor in Peru.
I want to say something about priests who devote their lives to the poor: One of the most transformational experiences in my life occurred when I got involved with some of those priest and watched the magic of that work.
I was at one brief point in my life mentored by Henri Nouwen, a Belgium priest teaching at Harvard Divinity School, who inspired me to spend some time in Haiti with a another priest, a true saint, who worked with Henri to help the poorest in Haiti. This other priest lived in Haiti full time, guiding the most disenfranchised people on this earth: impoverished Haitians who'd literally been discarded to asylums because of disabilities.
The Catholic organization dedicated to this saintly work was called L'Arche Internationale. The work is transformational, both for the recipients and even more so for the priests themselves. To realize that the cardinal that is now the Pope had devoted his life to the impoverished in this poorest of nations tells me so much about this man.
It is a shift in the right direction and brings so much hope to our world. Everyday, I try to look for the light in this world. The naming of Pope Leopold is a huge ray of light that will help eclipse the darkness we've been seeing. I am not Catholic, or any religion. But light is light. And coming at this time in our world, this new pope, is a huge blessing.

I totally agree, Jeanne. I was raised Catholic and although I no longer practice, I am very relieved by this news. Like Pope Francis, Pope Leo XIV appears to be a progressive on many social issues, with an emphasis on human dignity and care for the poor and marginalized. We'll see how this plays out, but I feel Pope Leo needs our prayers for discernment, strength and protection.
Do any of you feel a special significance in Leo being the first American pope, especially at this crucial point in time? I have no explanation why I feel that way, but it's a strong feeling.
@jeanne-mayell, I love Henri Nouwen! How blessed you were to be mentored by him. For those of you who haven't had a chance to read his writings, I would encourage it. What a deeply humble, wise, and loving soul.
I'm a United Methodist, not a Catholic, and I absolutely feel this choice a significant spiritual statement to the world. The new Pope, Leo XIV, told us who he is in the choosing of his name, from the turn of the century Pope Leo XIII. See excerpts from an AI overview below:
"Pope Leo XIII is a key figure in establishing the preferential option for the poor within Catholic social teaching. This principle emphasizes the Church's commitment to prioritizing the needs of the poor and vulnerable.
Pope Leo XIII highlighted the need for just treatment of workers, fair wages, and protection against exploitation.
He also stressed the duty of the state to ensure the well-being of its citizens and to protect the rights of workers."
Also, I find it striking that the name chosen is Leo, "the Lion". I see that as a direct spiritual challenge to other lions that stalk our world.
There is hope.

I converted to Catholism about 20 years ago, only to leave it soon after for various reasons I won't get into here. But I admired and really liked Pope Francis - he was a very good person and Pope. But when I learned about this new Pope, I instantly got chills on my arms and crown chakra (which is a good sign!) and I started crying - tears of joy. There is something very special about Pope Leo - all my instincts are telling he is the right choice!!
I saw a meme on social media this morning that said "America now has the Pope and the Antichrist". That stood out to me in all the comments and memes I was seeing this morning. I had just commented to someone that I felt like a character in Stephen King's The Stand..or Dean Koontz's The House at the End of the World...or Ray Bradbury's There Will Come A Soft Rain.
It does feel like we are entering the phase of increased resistance and battles ahead as the forces both here and in spirit gather to bring to culmination the changes we must make. Even in the mainstream media we are hearing more of our efforts 50501,Alt Park Rangers and Indivisible making a difference.
The wheels are coming off the 45/47 train. It is becoming so obvious his health, mental status renders him unfit. He will not serve out his full term.
