Just to make life a bit more interesting for us here on the East Coast of Australia Qld and NSW are being hit by incredible flooding from continuing heavy rains.

Thousands of people in NSW are homeless as Lismore suffers through its worse flood | ABC News - YouTube

Floods 'worse than anticipated': NSW SES | 7NEWS

This is a one-in-500 year flood we are experiencing. It is an unprecedented event and it is a most serious situation," Cr Cadwallader told the Seven Network.

Flood rescues in northern NSW resume as rain expected to move south, Ballina on flood alert - ABC News

They are predicting rain continuing for another week.

https://www.news.com.au/technology/environment/intense-level-of-rain-coming-for-australias-east-coast-as-nsw-qld-flooded/news-story/37663f71f8ed238e049f920ed696f089

We get what we call an East Coast Low which are extratropical cyclones typically during the winter months but may occur in autumn and spring as well.   For a place considered one of the driest continents we do get some monumental floods at times. I guess an East Coast Low doesn't sound as scary as a cyclone.  What's in a name eh!

Rats, what we have to look forward to this week starting tonight, I am on a hill so flooding not a problem but the floods so far keep breaking records.

PREPARE NOW FOR SIGNIFICANT FLOODING

- EASTERN #NSW

Unfortunately we don't have any good news. Eastern NSW is in for an absolute drenching over the next 7 days with all districts south of the Northern Rivers potentially picking up another 200-300mm with isolated falls upwards of 500-600mm possible.

This is going to bring a threat to life with significant flash and riverine flooding yet to come.

We urge all communities along coastal NSW to prepare now, know what you will do if flood threatens and ensure you remain up-to-date on the current warnings. This situation will change and evolve over the next few days.

We will continue to provide updates right throughout. We will also be sending SMS alerts for severe weather, flooding and major road closures.

Rain Rain go away.

Regards to all

Something a bit nicer to read about. Away from doom and gloom.

Queensland government buys out grazier to secure 'The Lakes' for a massive new national park - ABC News

"The Lakes is a really amazing property," Dr Fitzsimmons said.

"It's about three or four large perch wetlands on top of the Great Dividing Range —escarpment country, gulf plains, a range of threatened species and a range of ecosystems that are really under-represented in the reserve system.

"[It is home] to our flora and fauna, which are really critical in the face of climate change."

Major property purchase to become Queensland’s newest national park - Ministerial Media Statements

This purchase will ensure the future preservation of valuable, undisturbed ecosystems and habitat that will link up to an existing network of protected areas in the region,” Minister Scanlon said.

As it transitions into a national park, we will also explore ways to make it accessible for visitors who will definitely want to experience the incredible lakes, birdlife and walks for themselves,” Minister Scanlon said.

@matildagirl I remember seeing a prediction about Australia and flooding.

It is overcast, torrential rains, the outlook is watery. Melbourne and Sydney, Australia have mass flooding. Animals are running for the hills; they are sad they have no home. Many are wandering in the desert. (Laser Rae) 9/30/2020 for 2022

@lenor Well it’s in the process, we have had rain and thunderstorms for weeks and they had a weather bomb up in South east qld with flooding up there in Brisbane and areas around which then moved to the NSW northern rivers area which is where Lismore went under. It’s heading down south and we are  getting an East Coast Low forming which will affect Sydney today with the Nepean and Hawkesbury there will be flooding in the Sydney Basin and then it will be heading further down I guess to VIC and Melbourne. I am not sure about the desert part, but I saw on the news video one cow was on a roof and a few horses along with cars stuck on a curved bridge with water either side. This is La Niña in action as opposed to El Niño and his droughts. We don’t actually have a lot of time in neutral, it’s one or the other.

Life is far too interesting for the world these days hope we muddle our way through to a better outcome everywhere.

Regards to all

Of drought and flooding rains.

https://www.dorotheamackellar.com.au/my-country/

MY COUNTRY

The love of field and coppice, of green and shaded lanes,
Of ordered woods and gardens is running in your veins.
Strong love of grey-blue distance, brown streams and soft, dim skies-
I know but cannot share it, my love is otherwise.

I love a sunburnt country, a land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges, of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons, I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror- the wide brown land for me!

The stark white ring-barked forests, all tragic to the moon,
The sapphire-misted mountains, the hot gold hush of noon,
Green tangle of the brushes where lithe lianas coil,
And orchids deck the tree-tops, and ferns the warm dark soil.

Core of my heart, my country! Her pitiless blue sky,
When, sick at heart, around us we see the cattle die –
But then the grey clouds gather, and we can bless again
The drumming of an army, the steady soaking rain.

Core of my heart, my country! Land of the rainbow gold,
For flood and fire and famine she pays us back threefold.
Over the thirsty paddocks, watch, after many days,
The filmy veil of greenness that thickens as we gaze.

An opal-hearted country, a wilful, lavish land –
All you who have not loved her, you will not understand –
Though earth holds many splendours, wherever I may die,
I know to what brown country my homing thoughts will fly.

-Dorothea McKellar, 1904

I think this is the poem that best describes us.

Yeah the rain has stopped. Bad news it’s coming back again from Friday, hopefully nothing like it has been though. We are growing webbed feet. On the bright side it’s been rain bombs not Russian ones, but still has done a lot of damage.

I guess you guys are no strangers to extreme weather events these days either.

We may have to stop saying Happy New Year going by what the world keeps dishing up the last few years, but I guess hope springs eternal.

Regards to all.

https://7news.com.au/lifestyle/kfc/kfc-launches-fancy-11-course-degustation-menu-at-sydney-restaurant--c-6063528

https://www.foodandwine.com/news/kfc-11-course-tasting-menu-australia

Just for a change of pace with what’s happening in the world KFC in Australia in Sydney have teamed up with a chef and are having an 11 course degustation menu  with wine pairings being held over 3 days in a secret location.  Cost $75 a head with proceeds going to charity. I wouldn’t mind going for the novelty but 20,000 people have applied to go and the lucky ones find out in a couple of days if they made it.

Well I learned a new word, degustation. My first impression was it would not be something good. But now that I read about it, it sounds delightful. Too bad you don't get to partake 😮

@matildagirl

While not generally a KFC fan myself, I applaud this interesting concept and think it is rather cool.

Like @barbarmar22, I also thought it would be something icky but in fact it is a novel idea and sounds like fun.

Thanks for sharing Matildagirl.

@barbarma22 @lovendures

Quite a few restaurants over here have degustation menus and if you don’t mind paying extra with wine pairings. It gives them a chance to showcase their skills. The portions are small and beautifully presented so you have had a full meal but with all these different flavours and items to try.

There is a contemporary Turkish restaurant near me that have some fabulous things on their degustation menu, actually they have great stuff all the time.

They can get a bit pricey at the upmarket restaurants but for a special occasion it can add that bit extra.

Regards to all

https://www.stuff.co.nz/world/australia/300547828/antarctica-and-the-arctic-experiencing-recordsmashing-heatwaves-why-is-this

You will need to read the story to find out what this term means “undergoing the delightfully termed “bombogenesis”

Apparently the Arctic and the Antarctic are undergoing heatwaves at the same time, in the Antarctic the increase was in some parts 40degrees Celsius, which is a bit scary. They can’t rule in or out climate change at this stage.

I will be bold and rule climate change the cause. A NASA snapshot of temperature anomalies in 2016. Look at the North Pole.

@raincloud I don't see that claim being "bold" in any way, shape, or form.

I would say that claim is "grounded in fact" and "nearly indisputable"

Rats, the flooding may be back.

And now for some good news

https://www.health.gov.au/ministers/the-hon-greg-hunt-mp/media/landmark-pbs-listing-for-australians-with-cystic-fibrosis

“Without PBS subsidy, around 1,900 Australians would pay more than $250,000 a year for access to Trikafta®,” Minister Hunt said.

“This treatment is out of reach for most Australians, and now that it will be available on the PBS, patients will only pay a maximum of $42.50 per script, or as little as $6.80 with a concession card.

@matildagirl I hope you are okay. I've been reading that the flooding has come back with vengeance and has been hitting areas again that were impacted weeks ago. So many people's homes and communities have been affected and many animals too.

Sending you and the people and animals of Australia my thoughts and prayers.
