Say hello to Tropical Storm Bret.
But don't welcome him too strongly because his track is toward land. Puerto Rico, Haiti and Dominican Republic are possible targets right now.

I have to say that I miss Coyoteโs predictions, knowledge, and interest of/in hurricanes and tropical storms. I always think, โWhat would Coyote say about this season?โ Send us some clues, Coyote! 🧘🏼♀️

here are the names for the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, in case anyone would like to try to get a read on them ArleneBretCindyDonEmilyFranklinGertHaroldIdaliaJoseKatiaLeeMargotNigelOpheliaPhilippeRinaSeanTammyVinceWhitney
@jeanne-mayell I keep coming back to Cindy on the list. Maybe it will be a whopper?
I think someone else came up with the hurricane list this year but I don't remember who posted it.
Apparently Cindy formed as a TS but fizzled out. ย She however MIGHT come back which is rather rare but they are keeping an eye out to see. Perhaps you are picking up on the rarity?
Oh, interesting! I have not been paying any attention to news the last couple of days (our internet was off and on due to a storm) so I didnโt realize Cindy had already formed and fizzled! It would be interesting if she regrouped and started again.
@lovendures, @cc21, it may well be that Cindy sticks out to you because the storm made history. While there were no real impacts on land (and it is said it may restrengthen/redevelop), it is the first time in recorded history that a second named storm formed in the major storm development area of the Atlantic in the month of June, as noted here.
@cindy Very good point! Part of why what @lovendures said surprised me was because I thought, isn't it early for hurricanes?!
S. California is under a first ever Tropical Storm watch right now and Hillary is moving closer. ย Nevada is also expected to get hit hard with parts of Western Arizona and Utah feels some effects as well. ย Death Valley is expected to match or double its yearly rainfall average.
Oh, and have you looked at what is brewing out in the Atlantic? ย 4 possible storms might be forming.
Stay safe in the Southwest over the next few days.

@lovendures it's just so weird, isn't it?
And i can't help thinking about what would have happened if Hurricane Hillary had formed in the Atlantic instead, and made landfall at say, Mar-a-Lardo.ย What were they thinking when they added Hillary to the list of names this year?
Thank you. I'm originally from the east coast, and lived in FL, so I'm no stranger to hurricanes. My area of the Inland Empire is directly in the path - we are getting a lot of public emergency alerts.ย I battened down the hatches this evening (patio/pool stuff) and I am amazed that NONE of my neighbors have done anything. Several others are from the Northeast, so I'm kinda surprised. Then again many are RWNJs and preppers, so maybe their plan is to shoot at the storm in lieu of prepping?ย
I'm not the least bit worried. And as much as I despise Elon Musk, our solar system has 3 Tesla Powerwalls, and we already got notice from Tesla that we will be storing as much power as possible in the Powerwalls. I think it's unlikely our power will go out locally as we have underground utilities.ย The stored power is enough to power our refrigerator, water heater, and 1 of the 2 AC units for up to 3 days. And even on rainy days we absorb some light for power. And with all the winter storms, flooding was not an issue, so not too worried about that.
I will swing to the supermarket tomorrow, just for some foodstuffs I need - we are pretty well stocked here - pandemic hoarding habits that have not dissipated lol. I will also be curious to see what-all people buy here, because the east coast traditional storm shopping list is: bread, milk, eggs, toilet paper.
Also of note: hubby and I were supposed to go up to Pismo Beach this weekend, but my cousins we were going to visit all have COVID. We still needed a getaway, So we rebooked for Santa Barbara. Then found out about a rainy weekend and rebooked for Flagstaff. Then heard about the expected catastrophic flooding in the Coachella Valley and cancelled completely. We're going to wait til Tuesday to see where damage ends up and maybe make a plan for next weekend if we can.
We'll hunker down, but more for the fact that Californians really cannot drive in bad weather. Poor things, they just freak out and crash. Like bats in a thunderstorm.ย
Hope things don't get out of hand in AZ! Stay safe!
@Unk-P and everyone - last time a hurricane (technically a Pacific cyclone) hit SoCal was 1939. And BTW they are closing Disneyland!!!ย Inconceivable!!
ย
Well, not only is S. California dealing with a tropical storm, they just had a 5.1 earthquake in Ojai which is near Santa Barbara!
The things you discover about nature
They have been named stormquakes and can get up to 3.5 on the richter scale
Regards to all
Idalia. Thoughts?
During our last RTFN August 2nd, most of us saw at least one or more damaging hurricanes. The Gulf Coast and Florida area as well as N. Carolina and the Smokey Mountain were areas we predicted would get a major hurricane impacts and/or major flooding events. This were predicted for September 2023.ย
Jeanne predicted a "record strengthening " hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico late August or Early September specifically.ย
ย Idalia is supposed to intensify rapidly.
I ย believe there likely will be multiple hurricane events in or around the month of September. ย
In other RTF nights over the past year, Florida was also mentioned as having hurricanes around this timeframe. ย
ย
I'll give you all hurricane status reports as long as I have WiFi.ย ย
We are in the center of the predicted track, in North Florida.ย I'm not expecting any major effects -- since we are inland and not in a flood zone-- but there's always a good chance that a tree will fall on a power line and cut out the electrical power.ย But that is really not a big deal compared with what people on the coast have to cope with.ย ย
