Another thing my husband told me about was more technical, it is a way to seriously f* up the Texas reporting agencies around this law. Essentially, it involves setting a VPN to Texas, then creating fake email accounts to spam the hotlines with fake reports. Maybe someone here with a strong tech background can give us a better step by step outline? I'm happy to do that on my free time. I love throwing monkey wrenches into theo-fascist cogs!

maybe like this?

Gonna be lit when every Texas Republican officeholder gets sued in some obscure county for procuring an abortion, given that the claimant is insulated from assessments of attorney's fees or costs.— Sean T at RCP (@SeanTrende)September 2, 2021

I think we may need a separate thread for Marsha!, Marsha!, Marsha! Texas!, Texas!, Texas!

Yes, thanks, huzzah!

I did try using a Dallas VPN, I think the tip line is still down...

ETA: That bot script only works on iPhones.

I just read that people were flooding the Texas reporting website with spam and that GoDaddy is dropping them as a client. This article says the Texas reporting would violate GoDaddy's privacy rights in the terms of service.

As if this week couldn't be anymore of a horrific dystopian novel, I now give you this bit of news.

Remington Arms subpoenaed the report cards, attendance and employment records for five children and four educators killed in the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School as part of a lawsuit brought by the victims’ families.

We are talking about murdered kindergarten and firsts graders as well as their teachers.

The Sandy Hook families have been through so much, such tragedy from the shooting and vilification from the likes of Alex Jones and his followers.

Where is the What the F*** just happened thread...?

(No, don't create one.  That just means more of this is going to happen and I seriously can't take it anymore).

sigh...Remington, will they imply that little Bobby/Mary (made up names) deserved to be shot because he couldn't stay seated during reading group or used a naughty word on the playground? A how-low-can-they-go snapshot in time.

in welcome contrast, I remember a poignant story about Obama's visit to the grieving families. With complete authenticity, he was fully present with them, not only offering hugs but asking them to "tell me about your son, tell me about your daughter." He said it was the toughest day of his presidency.

I found this:

https://news.yahoo.com/obama-going-to-newtown-was-the-toughest-day-of-my-presidency-164748871.html

It is difficult to continually work to 'lift' the low energy in this country but this community is a beacon of light that inspires me to keep at it.

This is absolutely not surprising to me. Remington is like any other big business-profit before people. In the legal world, children have less value. They may have lost the vast majority of their lives-so in essence they've lost more than say an 80 year old in terms of time, experience & future income. However, the 80 year old has an established record of earnings, therefore they may get higher pecuniary damages in a law suit. Airlines, train operators, cruise ships, car manufacturers, etc., all try to limit damages in law suits and will employ all sorts of legal maneuvers to do so. Airlines & cruise lines are known to use antiquated laws designed to protect women & children when trying to decrease their liability. The Death On The High Seas Act was written in 1920 to insure that widows & dependant children got all of the future earnings of their husbands/fathers when they died in international waters. The act specifies that only dependants can make claims. So years later when cruising & air travel lost passengers, the company would then claim that the individual only had any worth if the had dependants. The unmarried & childless, or children had no value since only dependants could file claims. Thus the company would escape larger monetary losses. When transportation accidents happen, company staff are often asked to assist survivors or family members. They would ask such questions as "did they smoke, did they have any illness or take medications?" They claim these were questions to help in identifications, such as finding someone with cigarettes or meds on their person. In reality, the companies were preemptively collecting information to show that someone who smoked or was ill had a shorter lifespan, thus reducing the damages the company may have to pay. In wrongful death cases, how much of your life was stolen isn't a factor. Damages are based on how much potential income was lost. Therefore, reportcards may show which child was a slow learner, hence the intent to show the court they are worth lower damages because they probably wouldn't be doctors, lawyers, CEOs. They legal system only recognizes loss in monetary terms.

What I don't understand is every time there's a mass casualty shooting, guns sales go UP. When there's a mass shooting, and people get fired up about gun control, sales go UP. If Remington is having financial losses, that sounds like a "them" problem, or a problem stemming from the investigations and bankruptcy of their Big Daddy - the NRA, not a Sandy Hook one.

I also have to wonder if they are playing this for the Alex Jones/Q crowd who think Sandy Hook was fake; if the school and parents have to share documents, it will prove these children and teachers never existed in the first place.

Remington is doing what all big corps who get sued do -- try to torment, intimidate and demoralize the plaintiffs. Requesting school records I'm sure is meant to send a message to the parents in the case, namely, go ahead and sue us, but we will have no limits, unless the court stops us. It's also to scare away future plaintiffs. They're bad corporate citizens, like most corporations. They're also remarkably like the GOP if I can go off on a tangent. No limits, no bottom, nothing too vile to explore if they think it'll work to their advantage.

The mother who picked us up had known him and Jackie because her husband had been JFKs French ambassador.

@jeanne-mayell I have to wonder if I had the dream about my grandparents because you were going to share this. My grandparents were devout Christians and teetotalers; they were gifted a case of French wine from the French Ambassador after my grandpa did some work with him. My grandma poured every bottle down the drain as my dad and his siblings watched in horror. I wonder if your French Ambassador is the same as THAT French Ambassador!

Bingo. Remington also submitted tens of thousands of cartoon images in response to the plaintiff's discovery request to get internal documents. Out of 46,000 documents they submitted, less than 15% had any bearing on the Sandy Hook case and likely they excluded documents that showed their guilt.  They are hiding internal documents and instead sending cartoons.  It's a stall tactic.

Jeanne, I've been thinking about your climate migration predictions and am wondering if the migrations that you saw might also be because of politics.

We are basically coming to a point where there are two levels of civil rights in the US. If you want to vote, be safe from covid or guns, have health care, or have women with equal rights, you can no longer choose to live in a red state.

I think the migration may also be politically related because people will start fleeing red states because of draconian laws. We really are seeing a version of the American Taliban in many red states.

I've been planning to move from Texas to the Pacific Northwest for awhile now, but it suddenly became very urgent. Several friends of mine are also planning to move more quickly because of these legal changes. We just no longer feel safe in Texas. Once again, we have Texas, Texas, Texas.

Even though financially I'm not ready to move, it's starting to feel like I can no longer wait.

@mb Yes, that's a good point! I agree that what's happening in Texas will spark migration out of there. Some large businesses have already proclaimed that they will not open offices in Texas due to the restrictive new laws. I looked for the link on this but could not find one so if you have a story about this, let me know.

@jeanne-mayell Good thing I live in New York. At least the government is helping especially that the current Gov. Hochul is visiting the affected areas.

@jeanne-mayell I just searched and found this. https://fortune.com/2021/09/02/employers-texas-strict-abortion-law-voting-rights-covid-mandate/

For me, it's been a bunch of friends I've been talking to who didn't really love being in Texas but now feel compelled to get out, even if the cost of living elsewhere is higher.

@jeanne-mayell i keep wondering if the guys in your TX vision seemed like "incels", because they had chased all the womenfolk out of the state.  What sane person, of any gender, would want to stay in Texas Howdy Arabia?

I guess the problem with people leaving Texas because of the new restrictions and laws, they are likely to be more liberal leaning in their ideas which when it comes to elections will leave a majority of more right wing etc voters gaining ground. I guess if big business starts leaving, that is dollars and may hold more sway with changing things than voters.

Good luck guys

There are plenty of us liberal voters stuck in Texas due to jobs or family obligations.

Really, I’d love to be able to contemplate just picking up and moving to the PNW but it isn’t in my future.
