The republicans and many of their more affluent voters believe in the ideology of ayn rand. If everyone was familiar with what this meant, we would all understand why they do what they do. I won't go into it in depth, but the short version is a philosophical view whereby absolute selfishness is a virtue, and altruism is seen as a failing. Its a sick ideology.
