that's happened to us about 3 times as well, never in a pandemic though!
Glad it was nothing serious, and that despite the wee hour and being startled, other guests remained mindful.

Just to reiterate - my immune system is not stellar. Moving to sunny San Diego has been a boon - I don't get sick nearly as much, also I don't work anymore and my daughter has grown up, all things that make it less likely for me to get sick (I used to get sinusitis and/or bronchitis about 4 times a year back East, and if the flu shot was off by one mutated gene, I'd get the flu too, albeit a milder case).
This was the sickest I have been in over 20 years.

The are definitely people out and about here. Many at parks but not over crowded. Not too busy at Target , Whole Foods, Kohl’s and Sprouts, more busy at Walmart. Restaurants are open for in person dinning and outdoor. Some were outside but lots of empty tables. Downtown Austin was quiet. Went to Georgetown and it was rather quiet too so I would say things are open but I would think 30 -50 % quieter than would be normal. There is a street in downtown filled of store after store of bars mixed with tattoo parlors. They are all boarded up with artists spray painting murals and “ art” on the plywood. Our hotel is pretty quiet. One or two others on our floor.
all cities I have been in require masks and people are mostly respectful.
@lovendures oh wow, i didn't know your daughter was moving to Austin! Now i don't feel so bad for her having to move to TX, lol. I don't know what Austin is like these days, but when i lived there in the 80's, it was deeply weird and wonderful. And the very first Whole Foods was in a little old converted house a couple of blocks from me. It sold no meat products, and had very few yuppies shopping there. Mostly hippies and new wave/ punk rockers.
Most of the big cities in TX are more progressive than you would think. The only major city here that Hillary didn't win was Fart Worth. But Austin has always been a mecca for people who don't fit in to the dumb little towns and suburbs they grew up in. Hope she has as much fun as i did there.
I am feeling good about her being here, especially since I have finally had the opportunity to look a little around the area now. Her apartment is lovely. It has a courtyard which reminds me of an English garden with trees that are blooming pink flower blossoms . A pond is directly across her quiet street and she can see it from her balcony. Birds soar around the water at dusk and turtles can be seen in the water.
The new school (which is finishing being built and where she will teach when things eventually open back up fully) is absolutely incredible. It is huge too, with tons of windows, lots of light, stone walls and a thoughtful design. It is surrounded by grass and trees and is very peaceful.
The mom in me wishes she was a one day drive from home so we could visit more easily of course.
She followed her gut on the apartment and the move in general. I must give her credit for that. I was being guided to suggest she apply to the district she applied to and later received the job offer from. I guess it was a big confirmation on heeding our intuition.
Today I am home, quarantined in a bedroom, with nearly all the Covid symptoms. I wasn't into my new job a week before a coworker left work Friday to get a Covid test. (Seems she went to a July 4 party where someone had the virus.) On Monday she came back into the office, and she and I worked on a project handling hundreds of plastic badges together before she was abruptly asked to leave. Apparently our supervisor didn't tell her to stay home until she got negative test results. I had no clue and found out from a coworker later. Yesterday I felt funky and asked a couple bosses if the office had been exposed to Covid. I was told it's a private matter. Am I wrong to be livid?

Not at all. They might need to keep the person's identity private but for goodness sakes, if the county isn't contact tracing, work should do it if they know. I am aware of some large businesses who do their own contact tracing within the work place and this has lessoned infections for sure.
I am so sorry. I hope you feel better soon and that you can get quick test results.
