Hello!  Its Andrew from Los Angeles - and while I don't join in much I do enjoy reading and feeling this good energy shared by all.

So nice.  And always this focused pure energy works like a tonic.

Thanks Jeanne for bring us all together.  

I'm also not sure if I'm posting this correctly but as I'm in deetoo's good hands i feel secure in sharing my own childhood jell-o recipe.  

Secret Jell-O Candy (Serves One)

What You'll Need:

A) A package of Jell-0 (any flavor - large size best) 

B) One spoon (your choice)

C) Glass of Water (optional)

Steps:

Take spoon and place it in your mouth. 

Once spoon is wet with spit place in Jello package. 

You should have enough spit to make small pools of wet Jello. Note:  You can use a glass of water instead of spit as it is basically classier.

You can eat it immediately or leave until dry nuggets that you can then chew in secret!

@the-happy-medium Hey Cousin, We used to make this treat often when I was eight. We didn't bother with a spoon.  The right forefinger was just right.

okay -- how come I didn't know about the wet spoon/wet finger-in-the-jello-box treat?   I can just picture the two of you as tykes, creating your concoctions.  And I bet the spit made it extra special!  I loved pudding but hated that wiggly jello.  Damn ... I missed out!

@deetoo Andrew didn't exist when I was 8. He's much younger. And I think he's saying he eats this stuff now. Some people never grow up.

@the-happy-medium oops sorry for accusing you.   Eating raw jello is something I would do. In fact a year or so ago I had to be on a clear liquid diet for a few days so I bought a ton of jello. The liquid was so deliciously sweet that I couldn’t wait for it to jell in the fridge and I I poured it into a glass, added ice and bottoms up.

My experience with fried green tomatoes (I love them!) comes from Indiana and isn't nearly as complicated.  We just slice the tomatoes, dip them in egg, dredge them in plain flour, and fry them till they're brown and slightly crispy.  Pass the salt, and I'm on my way to green tomato nirvana. ;-) 

I'll have to try yours, @journeywithme2.  I don't think I've measured anything I cook on a regular basis for years.  Sure, I follow the new recipes (tweaking them as I go, of course!), but not the stuff I make often.

@tgraf66  I think you'll like them! It's not really too complicated ..you just mix all the dredge ingredients in one bowl while the sliced tomatoes sit there in the other one gently coated with the buttermilk. Then fry away. It makes a really nice and crispy crunchy crust. I have made them your way before too. I was just taught that way by my Grandmother. Truth be told... fried green tomatoes are a treat anytime you fix them anyway you make them. ?

Slightly off topic, but does anyone (maybe @JourneyWithMe2 ?) have a good southern banana pudding recipe? I scored a box of Vanilla Wafers and feel like they could be put to good use in such a dish!

Ready in: 60 mins.

Layers of Nilla wafers, creamy pudding and fresh banana slices
are the stars of this American classic.

3/4 cup sugar, divided
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
Dash salt
3 eggs, separated
2 cups milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
45 NILLA Wafers, divided
5 ripe bananas, sliced (about 3 1/2 cups), divided
Additional NILLA Wafers and banana slices, for garnish

1. Mix 1/2 cup sugar, flour and salt in top of double boiler.
Blend in 3 egg yolks and milk. Cook, uncovered, over boiling water,
stirring constantly for 10 to 12 minutes or until thickened. Remove
from heat; stir in vanilla.

2. Reserve 10 wafers for garnish. Spread small amount of custard
on bottom of 1 1/2-quart casserole; cover with a layer of wafers
and a layer of sliced bananas. Pour about 1/3 of custard over
bananas. Continue to layer wafers, bananas and custard to make
a total of 3 layers of each, ending with custard.

3. Beat egg whites until soft peaks form; gradually add remaining
1/4 cup sugar and beat until stiff but not dry. Spoon on top of
pudding, spreading evenly to cover entire surface and sealing well
to edges.

4. Bake at 350°F in top half of oven for 15 to 20 minutes or
until browned. Cool slightly or refrigerate. Garnish with
additional wafers and banana slices just before serving.

Makes 8 servings

NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION per serving
287 calories, 6 g protein, 50 g carbohydrate, 7 g total fat,
2 g saturated fat, 117 mg cholesterol, 134 mg sodium,
1 g dietary fiber.

Preparation Time: 30 mins.
Cook Time: 15 mins.
Cooling Time: 15 mins.
Total Time: 60 mins.

This is the one I use and grew up on. It's delish!

@journeywithme2 I tasted all the individual pieces, so I think I will love it. It brings me back to childhood family gatherings where someone always brought this pudding! Thanks again!

    I don't know if anyone here has addressed 'dressing' your sandwich yet. While I'm from Missouri and had a German mom my culinary palette was extremely limited growing up. Lots of hot tea with milk and toasted pumpernickel w a good muenster. When I started traveling for work in the Carolinas and Georgia I came upon the habit of topping ones sandwich with coleslaw. Hot dogs, pulled pork. burgers, it didn't matter. All were dressed w slaw. 

   The other southern delicacy I still enjoy is a sausage biscuit w strawberry jam. I've seen people mistakenly use plum preserves or grape but I do believe strawberry to be my favorite.
