Quick! Memories of your mother--first thought:

Me: Two quick thoughts:  When at nine I asked not to go to school one morning because the day before, we'd had a substitute teacher, and we were horrible to the substitute, and now our very tough teacher was returning and I knew she'd be rip roaring mad, my mother denied my request and said quietly, I think you just have to face the music."

Years later, as we began leaving home after college, she said, "Remember that no matter what happens, you can always come home."

First thought… my mother cooked and cleaned w fervor, frenzy, and in silence. She did everything so to do it correctly her way. She did the best she could I suppose. I’m grateful that I survived and thrived and raised my boys to be best friends and to be able to tell me anything and everything bc they truly know unconditional love. I suppose they saved me from never knowing a mother’s purest love and nurturing.
Happy Mother’s Day to All who mother in any shape or form. ❤️

@jeanne-mayell Mine instilled within me my love of musical theater - she pushed me into shows as a kid and I grew to love the challenge of taking on new roles.  While I dabbled as an adult (and finally left again - it’s a lot of work and time!) we see the entire season together at Wharton Center every year and it’s a tradition my family will continue forever.

Then, the gift of being a mother. When they put my newborn daughter into my arms, they handed me an angel.

When they laid you in the crook
of my arms like a bouquet and I looked
into your eyes, dark bits of evening sky,
I thought, of course this is you,
like a person who has never seen the sea
can recognize it instantly.

When they laid you in the crook
of my arms like a bouquet and I looked
into your eyes, dark bits of evening sky,
I thought, of course this is you,
like a person who has never seen the sea
can recognize it instantly.

They pulled you from me like a cork
and all the love flowed out. I adored you
with the squandering passion of spring
that shoots green from every pore.

You dug me out like a well. You lit
the deadwood of my heart. You pinned me
to the earth with the points of stars.
I was sure that kind of love would be
enough. I thought I was your mother.

How could I have known that over and over
you would crack the sky like lightning,
illuminating all my fears, my weaknesses, my sins.
Massive the burden this flesh
must learn to bear, like mules of love.

@dannyboy @journeywithme2 We were astonished to see the amazing light show as well on Friday night! We went to a friend's house about 15 minutes away where there is more sky to view and stood outside for about an hour, just taking cell phone photos and spinning around in wonder as the aurora danced above us, across the sky from end to end. It was also like a dome overhead. Just incredible. It was just what I needed. :)

@jeanne-mayell My dear Mom was very practical, but always had a sense of humor. She loved a good book and her garden. And she held onto her house right up until the near end of her life in case any of us kids needed a place to land in hard times. I love getting little, fun gifts for my girls here and there just because (reminds me of my Mom) and will always tell them what yours did -- that no matter what happens, you can always come home. My Mom left this world 5 years ago this week. Missing her, but loving remembering her and thinking about the things she passed along to us.

My mom, Inga Lianna grew up during the holocaust in Germany. Her mom was in a camp and she never learned housework despite a degree in Home Economics. She held book clubs, studied metaphysics, and worked full time. She would pull me onto her lap for hugs well into my 20's. She loved going shopping on weekends often calling out to me; 'Oh Teri Girl' across a crowded store. I named my daughter after her and love calling out to her; 'Oh Inga Girl' when we shop with a huge grin. I can feel my mom's amusement and her pulling me in for another hug.
