Misinformation spread online impedes rescue efforts.
I am watching Milton and waiting. We are very close to the Keys and Everglades, and I am considering where to evacuate TO. Right now the news is showing the path of Milton looking very broad, covering the entire peninsula. We are watching the Weather Channel and Accuweather, but most of the coverage is not about the new storm, but recovery efforts in NC. I hope everyone will be prepared for this if it turns into a powerful hurricane. I am sending prayers and asking that this storm slows down and harms none. Please join me.
@streaminglight I am in Naples, a few miles inland. I am caring for my elderly father (87) and our 2 dogs. I am from San Francisco, and I know how to prep for disasters like quakes and fires and so forth, but what the heck. We are so far down the Floridian peninsula, is there truly anywhere to evacuate to? The only thing I can figure to do is to check in with the neighbors here. I have a generator and a backup method of food prep and we have bottled water. I am very grateful the power lines are under ground around us. Maybe it's best to stay put where my father can remember where he is.
PS @KMAC. I had an impression of her the other day when I read about people wondering where/how she is after Helene. She was bawling her eyes out, and very shaken and scared, but alive. Sorry I wish I had better news. Hoping you all hear from your friend soon. I know she will be very glad you all sent her prayers. I dont read the future, but I get psychic impressions sometimes.
oops, may not be KMAC, but Kathleen from Ashville, NC. My apologies.
@westie The fact that you have a generator will be a big help if the power goes down. My sister has one and that's one reason I'm going to join her even though my house is five miles further inland than her's. It sounds like you have the food and water supplies necessary. It would help if you have impact windows or storm shutters you can put up. I've been through Irma, Ian, Debbie and several tropical storms since I arrived here in 2014. I suggest looking online for "spaghetti models" of Milton over the next few days. Keep an eye on the overall trajectory. The NHC Cone presently covers most of the peninsula but that will narrow. If you are near the Keys, it looks like you are outside the cone right now. But that doesn't mean it won't shift as it did with Ian. So -- unless you are told to evacuate with your Dad and 2 dogs, I'd say to hunker down and stay in close touch with your neighbors. Keep your phone and iPad charged. Friends of mine who live directly on the coastline in Bonita are staying put because they don't see any safe place to go. Others have friends on the east side of the peninsula they will stay with. You're not alone. We'll get through this together.
