@melmystery You have to show an ID when you vote? We don't in Mass....how do you feel about that? I'm really suspicious of these kinds of regulations (or whatever they're called) that Republicans have been trying to impose to restrict voting rights.
Voter registration card? We don't even have those in Cali. I show up, I give them my name and address so they can mark me as voted on the rolls, then give me my sticker.
Sometimes I feel like California is a different country altogether...
We have to show ID to vote in person in AZ and have had to do so for about 15 years now. It has made voting tricky for people who live in places like the Navajo Nation where many don't have a physical addresses and some were not even born in a hospital and have a different type of birth certificate.
@lovendures I was born at home. The doctor came out in a snowstorm. I got a live birth certificate. So in 2010 since we were going to Arizona, I was afraid I'd need it, I got a new certificate, and all they did was copy the original, and put a stamp on it. I was so looking forward to having a normal certificate. Also besides the registration card, they look you up in a book, and you have to sign beside your name.
I don't have a problem with it personally. I realize they want to make sure each person only votes once and I have no problem showing my ID and/or voting card to prove I am who I am. And I feel good knowing that no one can come in and claim to be me and vote in my place. I've always had to show an ID and/or voting card when I go in to vote so I haven't thought much of it. This is common practice in Virginia and nothing new for me to feel suspicious of. During normal polling they have a list of registered voters in the precinct and mark people off after they vote.
I realize that some folks - such as homeless people -- have problems getting ID's due to address requirements and so forth. I also realize that there are some tactics that have traditionally been used against minorities to deter their voting. I do feel that is a problem and that all American citizens should be able to vote without problem.
A friend pointed out that he probably did not need to check my ID since I was delivering a mail-in ballot. The poll attendant who took my ballot was actually African American and I don't think there were any Republican shenanigans at play. I think he was just doing his due diligence. He only checked to see that my name and address matched the name and address on the ballot before I placed it in the locked box.
Here in CT we have to present a form of ID when showing up to the polls. I'm not sure if that is the law, but then again my town is run by a bunch of republican older folks. So they do it anyway....
I pray Biden and his staff remain healthy. I don’t have an intuitive sense if we are being told the truth regarding 45, Melania, Hope Hicks, and other staff having Covid 19. With chaos being a frequently used tool by the administration, healthy skepticism seems well placed. I pray all level healing for all in need.
