The first series I mentioned was an older one that after I read it I wondered if it was written with a Trump like leader in mind

@liln, Would love to read it! Can you dust it off the binding a little and share the title with us?

Magic realism is one of my favorite genres. I especially like Alice Hoffman’s books. I’ll have to pick up the Salman Rushdie one you mentioned. I want to write a magic realism novel for young adults, but I’m stuck.

One about Trump would be challenging, indeed.

Alice Hoffman is my favorite author. I won a book of hers in a facebook contest and I sent her this poem...she sent me a blue emoji heart.

I wrote this after my father passed.

It's called Hats

Today I packed your hats away, they smelled of you, they smelled of you

And all the time I packed was brave, to give away , to give away

And all the time I thought of you, now World's away, now World's away

Today I packed your hats away, and cried because i am so brave

to be without your hats today.

@ghandigirl

I’ve seen those FB drawings she does. It’s so cool that you won! I tried a few times, but alas, it wasn’t to be!

That poem is a beautiful tribute and so reflective of what it feels like to mourn a beloved dad. Getting a blue heart emoji from Alice would be wonderful acknowledgement.

I absolutely love Alice Hoffman’s writing. It’s hard to explain. It’s lyrical, but it can be haunting in a way. She’s also one of my favorites. When she was on tour for The World That We Knew, she came out to California, and I was able to see her speak in San Diego. I moved heaven and Earth to get there, but it was well worth it. She’s a delight. Her use of color in her imagery is mesmerizing. I could go on and on... and on. Haha.

You gotta love AOC right now.

Both she and Ted Cruz are calling for an investigation on what is currently going on in the stock market.

AOC tweeted she wants to know more about Robinhood Apps decision to block the retail investors from purchasing  stock while hedge funds can still freely trade.  She is a member of the Financial Services Cmte and supports a hearing gif necessary.

Cruz responded that he "fully agreed".

AOC's response to Cruz is classic

"I am happy to work with Republicans on the issue where theres's common ground , but you almost had me murdered 3 weeks ago so you can sit this one out.

Happy to work w/almost any other GOP that aren't trying to get me killed.

In the meantime if you want to help, you can resign."

Wouldn't the truth be weird enough?

Agreed. A Jonathan Franzen-type realist novel about the T years would be so weird no one would take it seriously (well, I think Franzen fiction is already a pile of poop, but I digress). That’s why only magical realism would work. Check out how Ngugi wa Thiong’o depicted a Trumpian African dictator in his novel The Wizard of the Crow ? .

Yeah, Wizard of the Crow was looong, even for Ngugi,  but you're right, we sound more like both Latin America and Africa's supernatural politics. We need the wry humor of Ngugi all the time.

Does anyone get a read on Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) that they are willing to share?  What I sense is darkness, either in shade or in a lack of source light. Thank you in advance for any perceptions you may choose to share.

@billy-mike. I would like that, too. I am really concerned about her, and others, intentionally working hard to fracture the House, to the point where they are unable to legislate. Those people are knowingly rushing in to fill the void that Donald Trump left. They want to intimidate and cause fear and havoc. Did Kevin McCarthy go to FL to get further marching orders? I do not have a good feeling about this.

@lowtide I read that they had a cordial meeting and McCarthy told the Trumplicans that the moron will help them win their seats in 2022 and 2024. What was not said is that they have to not convict him. But that needn’t be said since everyone knows that is what the deal is.

All five of t**** impeachment lawyers just quit. He wanted them to use the false voter fraud claim as his defense. They did not want to go to Congress with that lie so they all quit. He has 8 days to find new lawyers and get his paperwork in. I feel the tide is turning and his days in the public eye( he keeps trying to stay there) will soon be gone forever.

After consideration I felt like this was the best place for this post.

Today there's news that Romney, Collins, etc. will be meeting with Biden to propose their own relief plan.  Unfortunately, the relief plan is woefully inadequate. https://www.washingtonpost.com/us-policy/2021/01/31/gop-stimulus-compromise/

We are, right now, facing three major converging crises on the Coronavirus front alone that requires swift and determined action.  Vaccination efforts have stalled, and all the converging variants of the virus mutating could pose a serious risk moving forward unless we can scale it up.  State and local governments have been hammered and many are in need of desperate assistance to stay afloat.  And the economy itself has been running on black magic and fumes for three years - when that bubble collapses we're toast.

If anything, I think Biden's 1.9 trillion is still low.  Collins and Romney's $500 billion misses the boat entirely.  I'm sure it's well intentioned but it's a conditioned response at this point to say "Democratic President = worry about future debt."

Regarding the Trumpists and the far right, they are seen as the fringes of society. Will they ever creep up again? How will the remnants of Trumpism evolve over time?

Totally agree. Heard yesterday morning that T will be totally finished in March. Everything will come crashing down around him.

Not what any R is expected. They will find they bet on the wrong horse.

So, Trump is apparently going to push the "I am the real president and the election was a huge fraud" defense, if his new selection of attorneys are anything to go by.

How sad has this situation gotten?  In a few weeks, we will have 50 Republican senators vote to acquit a man who encouraged a crowd to kill all the representatives and senators in the capitol (including McConnell, Pelosi, and even Pence) on January 6, and who is plotting to once again incite his followers by claiming that the reason he put their lives in danger was because the election was stolen from him.

By acquitting him, the Republicans will basically breath new life into the "election was stolen and Biden is a fake president" narrative.

The truly sad thing is that there is nothing we can do to stop them.  They worry more about ticking off the Trump base that they don't care about us.

Please, someone tell me that Trump will suddenly be punished as he so richly deserves.  Please tell me that something will happen that his power is taken away forever and his followers are punished and thrown out of power as well.  Why should we continue to be attacked and innocent people lose their lives and their happiness while these evil people continue to terrorize us with threats of violence and refusal to apply the law?

Although I know it won't happen, I hope and pray every night that justice will be served on Trump and his followers in such a way that they will leave the rest of us alone so we can work to heal the various wounds that they have caused.  They have made it clear now that they consider all the rest of us to be the enemy to be destroyed or ruled by them.  How can we exist side by side with people like that?

@allyn  We can't exist side by side with them. They have to be defeated and their numbers diminished, until they don't pose a threat to civil society.  Anything less and we're sunk.  Maybe it takes years, and we as a country rise again as Jeanne has predicted.  This is how I'm viewing it.
