Not a closure, but a major change: The DNC and CNN have announced that there will be no audience at the next Democratic Debate. They also won't hold the usual press meetings afterwards. https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/10/politics/dnc-coronavirus-primary-debate/index.html
Biden and Sanders have also both cancelled separate campaign events previously scheduled in Ohio tonight due to Coronavirus.
Meanwhile, Trump's campaign announced today that he will be in Milwaukee next week (March 19) at a rally for a group called "Catholics for Trump." The event is anticipated to have several thousand people attend.
Also a couple more universities/colleges:
University of California San Diego - will move all classes online for the spring quarter. https://ucsdnews.ucsd.edu/covid-19
Pacific Lutheran University in Washington has moved to online instruction https://www.plu.edu/chws/coronavirus/messages-coronavirus/
University of the Pacific (WA) moved to online instruction https://www.thenewstribune.com/news/local/article241015121.html
Midland University in Nebraska has closed entirely until March 15 due to Coronavirus and will decide at that point whether to go online. https://www.midlandu.edu/midland-university-closed-through-march-15

Not yet officially moving online, but San Diego State University and the University of San Diego have told faculty and students to prepare for the likelihood of moving to online instruction within the next two weeks.Â

When they say to prepare, they are actually preparing you to process the info. Â It will happen unless pigs fly.
At the moment, Berklee School of music is going to continue to hold classes but requires those who have traveled recently  to affected cities and counties to self quarantine for 14 days.  It is not just foreign countries, California, Washington and other states are included,
Brace yourselves. Â Free samples from Costco are being pulled. Â Not sure if this is nationwide or in select high virus states. Â
Why go if you can't get toilet paper, paper towels and free samples? Â

I hope so, since my daughter is in her last semester of graduate school at San Diego State. Â
My daughter is the weak link in our family coronavirus safety plan. She's the only one of us who is surrounded by lots of people every day. So we'll be relieved if she doesn't have to go to campus.
Â
Add University of California Santa Barbara to the list switching to online instruction, effective immediately.
Â
My alma mater, St. Lawrence University, will be moving to remote learning after spring break beginning on March 23rd and going through at least until April 13th. All university-sponsored student travel and sporting events have been postponed.
And San Diego State University just formally announced that they are moving to online classes as well. It will be voluntary at the discretion of individual Faculty to move online until Spring break at the end of March, then mandatory after Spring break. Â

Yay!

Neat trick since Massachusetts now has 92 cases, which puts it 4th in the nation among the states with the most cases.
Â
Exactly what I was thinking. Â That makes no sense. Â
Are states going to have pissing matches now? Â Just wait until a country bans the US from traveling there. Â
Also, it truly is just hours from  "process" to fact.
If you have a college student  tell them to be prepared for the likelihood of becoming an online student. Â
Â
I guess the first universities to cancel classes set off a cascade of panicked responses among college administrators across the nation. None of these administrators want to be in a minority group that has decided to keep on-campus academics and activities up and running. If a student or staff/faculty member gets the virus, it's a liability issue.
On a different note, I've been living in Plymouth, Massachusetts since the fall (yes, that Plymouth). 2020 is the 400th anniversary of Plymouth's incorporation, and the town has a whole suite of festivities and events planned throughout the year in celebration of their birthday. Today the town leaders enacted some prevention measures in response to the state of emergency that was just declared in MA, but they conspicuously left off any bans on large public gatherings...
There's a vibrant, politically active Wampanoag community here in southeastern MA. I bet some of their members are reflecting on the irony of the fact that Plymouth's momentous birthday might be undone by an incurable virus - four centuries after viral epidemics devastated New England's indigenous population.

The first confirmed case here in San Diego is at Scripps Green Hospital, which is right near the main UCSD campus. All our colleges here are close by, no surprise they plan to close all of them for a time.
COACHELLA - Postponed til October!
Stage Coach Fest - ditto!
NoLa Jazz Fest still refusing to postpone or cancel... BUT they just cancelled NoLa St. Patrick's day parade & events.
The Crooked Media guys have cancelled live tapings of Pod Save America and Lovett or Leave it for San Diego, Seattle, and Phoenix. Later dates TBD. Full refunds to ticketholders.
