The UK in 2021

So another update you may have been reading already, is the intention for the UK to now deploy Navy ships to protect UK waters from French fisherman if the UK goes out of the EU with no-deal. Right now there is a lot of disgust over this in the UK.

The only good thing right now I can say is the UK's commitment to tackling climate change, which surprises me given all the other nonsense that is going on.

Hi everyone, I have a really bad feeling about January in the UK. I don’t know what it is, but it feels like war. Does anyone else have any insight into the New Year in Britain?

I'm trying not to go there in my mind. I can think of lots of scenarios but I don't want to feed those any energy right now.

So far the one thing I think that's possible, is clashes with UK and French fisherman in the New Year. I do think that's an area that will not be immediately resolved, even with the UK using Navy ships to patrol the waters. The UK navy simply isn't what it once was - it can't be everywhere at once.

Perhaps you are picking up on the fact that Covid is out of control and mutated in the UK rather than some political and/or governmental war. I believe the UK —or London at least, is going into a total lockdown. Covid IS a war—for all of us across the globe but apparently there is a horrendous spike in the UK right now. Germany too. Maybe all of Europe. I only know about the UK from the news, but my sister lives in Munich, Germany and they are now in country-wide lockdown.

Chaos from the pandemic can cause people to fight one another. It doesn't have to be politics. Grief and fear create the potential for people fighting one another. ?

Yeah it is starting to get crazy now in the UK. Everyone can feel it. Panic is setting in. We have issues at the moment with this new covid variant around London. Food supplies are at risk because there is an issue with goods coming from Europe because of this. Then there is brexit on top, which currently looks like it will be no-deal.

I don't need to tell you what I think of our government in the UK, because you only need to read my criticisms above to see that, but as I have said before, the sooner they are gone the better really.

I can't feed this any more energy. I'm already worrying about so many things right now and so if you don't hear from me for the next few days it's because I've decited to have a social media and mainstream news blackout at home.

I am so sorry that Brexit and Covid are happening at the same time.  It sounds like it is going to be a rough period of time.

Thank you for your kind words. It's a sucky situition for the UK, but I also look across the globe and see it is a sucky situation everywhere. So I just have to take one day at a time and remain positive as best I can.

For now, I am trying to not get caught up in the frenzy of the news and what is being said in social media. I was nearly going to go offline altogether but then I felt that this place actually would be a good escape for me and a reason for me stay online through this period.

I am really happy this community is helping you navigate these troubling times Luminous.  It is the biggest bright spot on the web for sure and a bright light of all of us to be a community of like-minded people.  I tagged Jeanne so she can see how people continued to be helped from her efforts.

Hang in there.  I can relate to your situation.  I live in the Deep Red state of Tennessee, where the majority of people that I live with are die-hard Trump supporters who have continued to deny the truth of the Covid-19 virus and are now paying the price for it.  Many are now dying.  I see the ambulance pass by my window at my office and my home at least three times a day for the last three weeks (Note: I live out in the country where there is little traffic, so the fact that the ambulances are extremely busy right now says a lot about our situation).

I too have deep loathing for those in charge and am angered at the fact that there is little I can do about it.  I am surrounded by people who spout conspiracy theories and must look upon voters outside my state to save the country.  I hear Fox News played on TVs all the time, and it ignores Trump's rants in order to focus on how the "radical left" are out to get anyone, and that Georgia must re-elect two nutcases to keep the Senate in Republican hands (which will ensure gridlock and suffering for more years unless Democrats finally use their power to the maximum, which they appear unlikely to do.)

Meanwhile, I have noticed prices on common goods have slowly but steadily rose over the last few months, and certain goods are becoming scarce.  While I believe myself prepared (We have stocked up on many goods over the months so that if all the stores are shut down, we have enough food to meet our needs for at least three months), it is still an anxious time.

It is so hard to believe that sanity is coming, especially with the current leadership.  But please know that we all care about you and wish you well in this troubled time.  I am most decidedly not a Brexit fan (I feel that some people who voted for it were focused on anti-immigrant sentiment than they were about any issues with the EU, but that is my opinion only.)  Nevertheless, voters on both sides of the issue are getting the shaft while the politicians continue to screw it up for the British people.

But tonight, Jupiter and Saturn are meeting in the sky to form the "Great Conjunction", or "the Christmas Star" for the first time in 800 years.  I find it interesting that this bright spot would appear on the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year (and thus, by extension, the longest night of the year.)  Is it symbolic that these two planets would shine brightly together on the longest night?  Could it be a symbolic message?  I believe it to be so.  We just need to stick together and hang in there.

Thank you. I'm sure all here who are from the UK really appreciate your words right now - I do.

Last I read, there may be a whole new national lockdown in the new year. But as for brexit I would hope our government has a serious re-think, especially with all this chaos with supplies from Europe.  My opinion is most of the brexit decisions have came across as self-harm. But so many are in denial of its self-destructive nature, especially at this time with covid, supply problems, and economic turbulence.
